| | Will Calhoun Native Lands CD Will Calhoun Discography of CDs
This release contains a bonus DVD with interviews, footages and commentaries.
Drummer Will Calhoun's Native Lands is a rather ambitious effort and quite successful. The personnel changes on each selection, ranging from a quintet with tenor-saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and trumpeter Wallace Roney to several duets, solo pieces for Will Calhoun on a variety of instruments, and even a 30-second statement on drums from two-year old Tateich Calhoun. The leader wrote the majority of the selections yet does not dominate, and his many illustrious sidemen have opportunities to stretch out. The post is post-bop jazz, sometimes looking towards Africa, always rhythmically interesting, and never dull or meandering. The accompanying DVD is part travelogue, part documentary of the record dates, and also holds one's interest. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

Native Lands album
$9.29 SONIC TRANCE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
New Orleans trumpeter Nicholas Payton spent the 1990s getting in touch with his roots by digging deeply into the work of Louis Armstrong, as well as composing music inspired by the Satchmo sound. He was seen as the savior of trad jazz lovers, but with SONIC TRANCE, Payton leaves the past behind at last, moving both feet firmly into the future. In place of old-school ways, Payton surrounds his always-inspired trumpet playing with funk and hip-hop beats, samplers, and a variety of synthesizers and assorted electric keyboards.
Not only does Payton ...
| | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) DualDisc
Native Lands CD music
$15.69 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied ...

| | Dianne Reeves Bridges CD (1999)
Native Lands album
$9.25 BRIDGES was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
Along with jazz-folk diva Cassandra Wilson and mother-of-them-all Abbey Lincoln, the eclectic singer Dianne Reeves is a strong believer in mixing up genres on her albums. It's perhaps the only way to be a "jazz" singer now. Leave the standards-only sets to marginal cabaret belters. Still, a singer with Reeves' formidable chops is sometimes tempted to overdo it, an occupational hazard in current jazz practice. Happily, this intelligent vocalist has the taste and a light enough touch to bring her highly varied programs off with aplomb.
Tunes like Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" and Joni Mitchell's "River" are jazzed up just enough to suit her sinewy sensibility but still retain their outline and essential meaning. Reeves is ably assisted in this task by a crack team of accompanists, including pianists George Duke and Billy Childs, soprano saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and bassist Stanley Clarke, who produces some beautifully articulated ...
