This is a crazy and consistently riotous two-disc set that features the Don Ellis Orchestra at its height. The 20-piece orchestra (with trumpeter Ellis doubling on drums along with a regular drummer and two percussionists) often used electronic devices (such as ring modulators) at the time to really distort its sound. When coupled with odd time signatures and such exuberant soloists as Ellis, trombonist Glenn Ferris, tenor saxophonist John Klemmer (showcased on the remarkable "Excursion II"), guitarist Jay Graydon, altoists Fred Selden and Lonnie Shetter, and tenor Sam Falzone, the results are quite memorable. Highlights of the date include "Final Analysis" (which contains a countless number of false endings), a bizarre rendition of "Hey Jude," and an often hilarious remake of "Pussy Wiggle Stomp." In 2005, the Wounded Bird label reissued this session on CD for the first time. Unfortunately, no bonus tracks were available. ~ Scott Yanow & Al Campbell

| Don Ellis At Fillmore Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) The Don Ellis release I (and others) waited for. I've been waiting years for this reissue, and I know several others at my local store who shared that feeling. My vinyl had a warp, and wasn't great anyway, so it was every bit as great as I remembered to hear "Final Analysis" kick off a very exciting album. Where else are you gonna hear bewildering time signatures played at rock intensity by a pumped young jazz big band in front of knowing jazz hippies in a pyschedelic venue? Where else are you going to hear a ring modulator on a trumpet? So much talent on display, from chops to arranging to writing. I knew a bass player who claimed to have played with Don Ellis slightly before this period, and I asked him how he could deal with those time signatures. His response: "Easy....one, one, one, one, one...." For those unfamiliar Wounded Bird is a no-frills reissue label at a reasonable price. Bonus material and packaging hardly matter with music this good. Submitted by Bruce (Seattle, WA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
At last! What a treat to have this old favorite album out on CD. Perhaps the first jazz LP I ever bought. Ellis was a fascinating guy, connecting the big band and fusion eras with his talented combos and odd time signatures. You could tie your feet in knots trying to tap your toes to his tunes. I saw this band play two sets live soon after the release of this record - one of my favorite concert memories. I even requested (and they complied) a 2nd version of "Final Analysis". Great memories Submitted by steve7701 (Sierra Vista, AZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Don Ellis At Fillmore music CDs
$10.15 BioI cringe upon hearing someone call Ports of Aidia a local band. Really. To me, they are so much more than that. To their fans, they’re more than that. To our scene, they’re more than that. In fact, anyone that says POA is just another local band doesn’t really know what they’re talking about. They have far too much talent to be stuck with a label like that, and they’ve been to far too many places. They never really stay in one place (both in the musical and literal sense) to pin them down and say they play _______ type of music and they are from ________. As a journalist, I’m supposed to be objective. But as a rock reporter, I can honestly say that they have more potential and more talent than any other musical group in the area. They’re younger, smarter, sharper, funnier and more confident than any other band I’ve met. They don’t belong here. They kind of remind me of that band, Clearwater, from the movie Almost Famous. Have you ever seen Almost Famous? What I like most about that band, and what I like most about POA is two very key things: 1.) Authenticity and 2.) Likeability. If you ever meet them, you’ll see that POA exudes both of these qualities. They’re authentic in the way that they were put together the way a band is supposed to be put together. The old fashion way – five young guys with nothing better to do, getting together and playing musical instruments in a garage/loft/bedroom/whatever. Likeability isn’t really that ...
