Jay McShann, from whose Kansas City orchestra altoist Charlie Parker emerged in 1940, has had a very viable career as a pianist and occasional vocalist in the 65 years since then. McShann's piano style, while emphasizing the blues, has often sounded at its best on swing standards, hinting at stride piano and boogie-woogie but being in its own uncategorizable style. The two-CD set Solos & Duets reissues in full three earlier LPs. A Tribute to Fats Waller, nine songs associated with Waller, and Kansas City Hustle (which has a few basic originals plus "'Round Midnight," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," and "Rockin' Chair") are from the same two-day period in 1978. The 1980 album Tuxedo Junction, featuring a couple of McShann's bluish originals plus five swing standards, is a duet outing with bassist Don Thompson. In addition, the "three-fer" adds previously unreleased vocal versions of "Baby Won't You Please Come Home" and "Keep Your Hands Off Her" to the very full program. Throughout this definitive reissue, Jay McShann is heard in prime form, displaying his own brand of rollicking musical joy. ~ Scott Yanow
This 2-CD collection brings together three LPs from the 1970s which illustrate superbly the attributes of Jay McShann's piano stylings. "Tuxedo Junction," the title track, salutes Erskine Hawkins. Also recalled are Sir Charles Thompson and Illinois Jacqu

Solos & Duets music CDs
$8.49 Frank Wess has long been one of the most underrated flautists in jazz, but it's his primary instrument on this CD reissue of a Moodsville LP recorded in 1960. With fine accompaniment by piano master Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Bobby Donaldson, the leader's lyrical chops are evident in Alec Wilder's rarely performed ballad "It's So Peaceful in the Country." The light Latin setting of "Star Eyes" initially spotlights Flanagan's elegant piano, with the ...
| | Harold Mabern Few Miles From Memphis CD (1968)
Solos & Duets songs
$14.15 On A Few Miles from Memphis, recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968, he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.
When record labels like Prestige release two albums on one CD, it's a great bargain for music fans. A Few Miles from Memphis combines the album of the same name and Rakin' and Scrapin', both recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968. On the first set he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. The second set includes a similar setup but inserts trumpeter Blue Mitchell into the lineup and brings drummer Hugh Walker on board. ...

| | George Wein Wein, Women And Song CD (1955)
Solos & Duets album
$9.75 George Wein is best known as the founder of the Newport Jazz Festival in 1954 and an enthusiastic impresario who became instrumental in jump-starting jazz festivals in New York City in the early '70s, but Wein has also recorded as a pianist and singer from time to time. The Atlantic LP Wein, Women and Song features Wein in fine form; his friendly sounding vocals are rather soft and mellow, with a bit of vibrato on the end of nearly every phrase, though the trumpet solos by either Ruby Braff (trading licks with tenor saxophonist Sammy Margolis on a superb treatment of "You're Lucky to Me") or Bobby Hackett (with fine muted backgrounds on the melancholy "I'm Through with Love") add something special to each song. Wein's consistent ability to put together swinging groups of all-stars to accompany his concerts and occasional recordings can't be discounted, so this entertaining album shouldn't disappoint anyone familiar with George Wein's somewhat sporadic but long career as a performer. ~ Ken Dryden
