At the start of their career, Chicago's Enuff Z'Nuff were touted as the rightful heirs to Cheap Trick thanks to their uncanny talent for combining alluring pop melodies with controlled hard rock crunch. Like their late-'70s heroes, Enuff Z'Nuff took most of their inspiration from a single influence: the Beatles. And where the Trick imbued their initially innocent-seeming pop gems with a dark, sinister edge, Enuff Z'Nuff, in accordance with their environment (late-'80s pop-metal), spun their music with a liberal dose of decadence and debauchery. Indeed, raunchy rockers such as "Heaven or Hell" and "Missing You" (like the bulk of their self-titled debut) stick close to this formula. But Strength soon introduces an entirely deeper side of the band, with lush string arrangements and chorused vocals contrasting perfectly with the ascending and descending chords of the title track. From here on out, anything goes, as the foursome rip through racy hard rock gems like "In Crowd" and "The World Is a Gutter," then relax into stunning power ballads like "Goodbye" and "Blue Island." The material which lies between is even better, and the two tracks which kick off the album's second half, "Mother's Eyes" and "Baby Loves You," are simply unbelievable pop songs. Take away three or four of its 14 tracks, and Strength would be a perfect album, but a little extra fat never hurt anyone. Arguably the greatest Abbey Road tribute and/or rip-off of the early '90s (depending on who you ask), Strength was sadly lost in the shuffle of the alternative rock revolution and through sheer record company incompetence, and Enuff Z'Nuff would sadly never recover. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Strength Music Review Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews One of the best records of the 90s... Forget Enuff Z'Nuff's pigeonhold status as a "Hair Metal" band. This band owed more to the Beatles and Cheap Trick than AC/DC. And Strength, their second record, is the best work they ever did. If you like good power pop with hooks all over the place, put your indie cred away and buy this album...

Needs Radio Play This is one of if not the best band I have ever heard . American radio should be playing these guys . The songs have a lot of meaning if the would only get air time . This band out does a lot of the junk they call music on the radio . Submitted by plasticlugnut (Chicago Illinois) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
No Respect... Enuff Z'nuff was never able to live down their debut video "New Thing". While they might have looked like a psychadelic version of Poison, if you closed your eyes and just listened, it was obvious there was a lot more going on.
With Strength, their second (and best) record, Z'Nuff decided to fully embrace their Beatles fixation - with fantastic results. Everything works here (save the misguided bluesy number): the ballads are beautiful, the mid-tempo pop tunes crackle (especially "Hollywood ya"), and the rockers rock. Start to finish, Chip, Donnie and the boys are on a roll they would never quite achieve again...

A must have This is one of the best band that came up from the late 80s! Very good musicians with awesome catchy songs. Itīs a mix between The Beatles with Led Zeppelin with very powerful chorus. When I listen to the U.S. rock music that is considered in nowadays, I really feel disappointed and think why good music like Enuff Z' Nuff doesnīt have exposure, a lot of people deserve and should have access to Enuff Z' Nuff's music. After all, all MTVs and radios should be all about the music, isnīt it? Submitted by Gabriel (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$180.29 This is a sumptuously appointed six-CD collection of the iconic country artist Merle Haggard's later Capitol Records years. A follow-up to the German reissue label Bear Family's 1995 UNTAMED HAWK set, it compiles most of the recordings Haggard made throughout the end of the 1960s and the first half of the '70s, during one of the most divisive periods in 20th-century American history. Though the singer's appeal during this polarized time was superficially conservative, as evidenced by songs such as "Okie From Muskogee" and "The Fightin' Side of Me," he was actually a rugged individualist in the true country tradition, whose sentimental streak, displayed here on such classics as "Silver Wings" and "I Forget You Every Day," was a mile wide.
Over the course of six stunning discs, the HAG box set, lovingly compiled by hardcore country completist label Bear Family, covers some of the most crucial years of Merle Haggard's career. From 1968 to 1976, Haggard did for country music what Frank Sinatra had done for pop vocals by popularizing the concept-album phenomenon. This set includes Haggard's first-class tribute albums to Bob Wills and Jimmie Rodgers, his gospel album recorded in rural Baptist churches, his New Orleans-recorded Dixieland album, and more. Also part of the package are three live albums (including the milestone OKIE FROM MUSKOGEE-LIVE) and a batch of solo instrumental recordings by Haggard's longtime band, the Strangers. An im
2007 release of a mammoth 6CD box set (LP size) of the Country & Western icon's complete recordings between 1968 and 1976 on the Capitol label presented on this edition by the Bear Family label. As with all their meticulous boxes, you are assured of quality transfers along with the best graphics/photos and notations in a hardcover book from these connoisseurs of great music.
