Remember Back in the Day (circa the '70s, to be exact) when groups like Malo, War, and Tierra fused classic soul and Latin brass elements so effortlessly that they seemed to be borne of the same culture? Legendary jazz percussionist Edgardo Cintron and producer/vocalist Rocco DePersia do, and they lead their alternately romantic and sizzling 15-piece Latin R&B band through a collection that is part-time travel, part contemporary blast. From the instantly recognizable joys of "Suavecito" and "Hey There Lonely Girl" (rendered with seamless and soaring brass-percussion-multiple vocal arrangements) through other familiar gems like "All Day Music" and "Expressway to Your Heart," it would be easy to get the idea that this is just a fun cover band -- if only the originals weren't so damn feisty and danceable themselves. "Anita" is a magical late-night affair and "Another Night in San Juan" is picture-perfect, balmy Latin instrumental soul, complete with brilliant jazz piano and scorching horn textures. The title track ensures that the traditions of doo wop will always be a part of this fascinating musical hybrid. After a colorful twist on "Since I Fell for You," Cintron closes with the sweet doo wop harmonies of "Where Do We Go from Here?" -- kindly encouraging us (as if they needed to) to ask for more of their low rider grooves and East Coast Latin soul. ~ Jonathan Widran

Back In The Day
$11.45 During a career that's stretched for more than 40 years, James Darren has touched many of the bases in the entertainment game. He started in the 1950s when he was a teenage idol of the big screen, and then moved on to appearances on any number of TV shows over the ensuing years. One of the more notable of these appearances was his portrayal of a swinging 1960s Rat Pack crooner on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. This wasn't one of those too-often-seen instances of miscasting: The man can sing, and this, his latest album, is telling evidence of his gift. Coincidentally, ironically, or whatever, Darren comes across a bit like another singer who began his career in the 1950s: the similarly surnamed Bobby Darin. And like his near namesake, Darren suffers from unfair and unnecessary comparisons to Frank Sinatra. It probably doesn't help matters that several songs on the album are strongly associated with Sinatra, including "All the Way," ...

Back In The Day
$13.39 Violinist Michael White is a respected figure on the modern jazz scene, one of the earliest exponents of his instrument during the free jazz movement of the '60s; his résumé includes stints with Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra, John Coltrane and others. Out of respect for his tremendous accomplishments and contributions, one hesitates to be too critical of this album, which was made as a celebration of the thirty-year anniversary of his Impulse! release Land of Spirit and Light (and includes several of the sidemen who contributed to that album). And yet there is, unfortunately, no way to ignore the serious flaws on this album. It opens in a distinctly unpromising way, with the abstract and apparently free "Message from the Sky," a tune that meanders aimlessly and features rather whiny wordless vocals from Leisei Chen. Things get a bit better with "Circumambulation," which is composed and features some very lovely guitar playing from Timothy Young -- but it also features a painfully out-of-tune solo by White and a chord progression far too simple and repetitive to sustain interest throughout the tune's 12-minute length. The album's two strongest tracks are both Latin flavored: Chen's vocalese on "Serenade" is effortlessly beautiful, and the sweet chord changes and gentle bossa nova beat make this track a joy -- until White ...
