In the early '80s, a style of heavy metal was fast rising, in which groups sang about (and even to a point, dressed like) characters from an era long ago, in which gentlemen dressed in armor, and saved damsels in distress in tall castles. While some of these groups built a long-term career (Dio, Iron Maiden, etc.), many fell by the wayside as the style faded away, and was replaced by thrash and glam metal acts. By the early '90s, some of the music from these earlier bands could be detected in such new acts as Dream Theater and Iced Earth, who also pushed the 'technicality' of their music up a notch. Fast-forward another ten years to the early 2000s, and there is a new crop of bands that combine both of these metal eras together, especially by the prog metal "supergroup" Demons & Wizards. Comprised of Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer and Blind Guardian's Hansi Kürsch, the duo issued their second album in 2005, Touched by the Crimson King. Picture a modern metal soundtrack accompanying a triumphant ride through a forest on horseback, and you have an idea of what such songs as "Crimson King" and "Terror Train" sound like, as well as the album-closing cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song." But not all of Crimson King is riff-based, as evidenced by the tranquil ending of "Beneath These Waves" and the beginning of "The Gunslinger." But by and large, Touched by the Crimson King is a modern-day prog metal fan's dream. ~ Greg Prato

Touched By The Crimson King Music Touched By The Crimson King Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews These 2 guys should have a kid together !! No lame joke intended but these 2 guys complete each other's style so well that the result is just fantastic. The Blind Earth/ Icead Guardian combo works perfectly. Powerfull riffs completed with powerfull vocals. Who said Americans and Germans don't get along!
An excellent follow up to the first Demons & Wisards. I think that this one might be even better...I might be biased since several songs seem to be related to the excellent "Dark Tower series" from S.King.
If you call yourself a metalhead, get this one now...or the Crimson King will get you.

A Touch of Metal Magic I have to say I hate double-bass Euro-metal galloping beats. And thank goodness there is a lack of it here. This album merges the best of what Blind Guardian and Iced Earth has offered. Hansi's vocals and Jon's riffs work well together on all the songs that were written. I loved the mood and feel ... and the lyrics told stories that were simply mesmerising, especially 'Beneath These Waves' and 'Down Where I Am'. Awesome--as usual Yes, they've done it again. Between Hansi's haunting and powerful vocals and John's scorching guitar licks and solos, this is truly a CD above and beyond the limits of most metal out there. Thanks guys, you ROCK! Good, but not great like the first one As a huge Iced Earth fan who really liked the first D&W album, I looked forward to this one with great enthusiasm. After listening to it for a good two weeks, I would say it's just average and can't touch the first one. The title track, Spatial Architects, and Love's Tragedy Asunder are my favorites. The rest sort of blend together for me. Overall, an average effort. Submitted by bill.langin (New Orleans, LA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Good follow-up Great song writing on this CD. It just as the first D&W. Great, melodic rock! It could use a little more bass in the mix, but otherwise has a very polished sound, as you would expect from listening to Iced Earth & Blind Guardian's other releases.
One diss though- I read "limited edition" before I ordered, expecting this to be the 2CD version. It's not. What Makes the record companies value Japan & the UK fans more than us when it comes to adding bonus features? I've never understood that. $9.35 Although they describe themselves as a straightforward hardcore band, Birmingham, Alabama's All In reveal strong ties to the slower tempos and viscous weight of sludgecore on their first album, 2006's Nothing to Lose. This is most likely a factor of growing up in the South, where sludge has been the prevailing regional ...
