On THE DROP, Brian Eno's first non-collaborative full-length work in four years, one of the master sculptors of late Twentieth Century sonic landscapes is once again off on an expedition to discover new moods and textures. Comparatively speaking, each of these seventeen instrumental pieces contains more physical motion than some of Eno's older ambient albums.
Some vignettes are drenched with a computerized soul that is nearly impossible to pin down -- particularly the Eastern-tinged, sorta funky, quasi-hip-hop of "M.C. Organ," and the syncopated rhythms and synth of the indescribably catchy "Swanky." But the THE DROP's standout is unquestionably the closing, half-hour-long "Iced World." With a mid-tempo backdrop of light, bell-like percussion and muted bass drum, Eno plays minimalist piano notes and synth figures. Throughout, a mid-to-high frequency drone whisks the listener off to an ambient netherworld. It's magical, if you're in a magic-receiving mood.Rolling Stone (9/4/97, p.70) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...Angular melodies, bent guitar notes, piano drizzles and manipulated effects make up THE DROP's mixed bag of 17 minicompositions..." Entertainment Weekly (7/25/97, p.73) - "...Like most of his ambient forays, this one takes time to shape....But once he locks into confident bass tones, the fluttering notes at the high end seem to find their compliment..." - Rating: B The Wire (p.55) - "[T]here are mesmerising pieces here..." Drop album
$12.95 The UK-based 4AD label was responsible for some of the 1980s' most cutting edge alternative music. This Mortal Coil is something of a label pet project, an ever-shifting, collaborative outfit that includes members of such 4AD bands as the Cocteau Twins, Modern English, Dead Can Dance, Color Box and Wolfgang Press. True to the label's aesthetic, the music of This Mortal Coil is ethereal, abstract, dreamlike and sometimes spooky.
Most of the outfit's records focused primarily on covers of songs by seminal alternative rock artists, and IT'LL END IN TEARS is no exception. Included here are Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren," sung by Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser, Alex Chilton's "Holocaust," sung by Howard Devoto, and a startlingly poppy rendition of Wire's "Not Me." The track list is also sprinkled with originals, most notably the work of Lisa Gerard and Brendan ...
| | Church Hologram Of Baal CDs (1998)
Drop CD music
$13.89 The first 7,500 copies pressed of HOLOGRAM OF BAAL contain a bonus CD.
HOLOGRAM OF BAAL, the eleventh Church album (depending on whether or not you count REMOTE LUXURY as a album or 2 EPs, as it was originally released), marks a move away from the eclectic nature of some of the band's past few efforts. Here it focuses on the lush, psychedelically tinged pop of albums such as HEYDAY (that said, however, some editions of this CD include BASTARD UNIVERSE, a 79-minute long bonus disc of 6 linked experimental instrumentals, which is well worth seeking out).
Easily the equal of anything in the band's catalogue since STARFISH, HOLOGRAM would make an ideal starting point for new fans or fans who've drifted away over the years. Standouts include "Louisiana," a gloriously languid track featuring guitar feedback in the distance, rolling like waves on the ocean, and "No Certainty Attached," a dense rocker (or as rock as the Church ever ...

Drop music CDs
$13.69 One of only two major ambient works Brian Eno recorded in the '90s--THE SHUTOV ASSEMBLY being the other--NEROLI is a single composition, 58 minutes long, that combines Eno's concept of music designed not to be listened to attentively with the vaguely North African feel implied by the piece's title. Written in the Phrygian mode, with flattened intervals and missing ...
| | Brian Eno Shutov Assembly CD (1992)
Drop songs
$13.69 The 10 pieces on Brian Eno's 1992 ambient collection THE SHUTOV ASSEMBLY were recorded between 1985 and 1990. In the intervening two years, however, artists such as the Orb and the KLF had placed Eno's concepts of ambient music into the context of dance music, creating ambient house, one of the '90s most important club trends. As a result, critical and public opinion of this album at the time was mixed-to-negative, with many complaints that the pieces broke no new ground. A single listen belies this statement, as THE SHUTOV ...
| | Brian Eno Nerve Net CD (1992)
Drop album
$13.85 In 1991, Brian Eno announced the imminent release of his first all-pop solo album since 1978's BEFORE AND AFTER SCIENCE, to be called MY SQUELCHY LIFE. Instead, Eno shelved that album and released the peculiar NERVE NET in its place. Featuring a few of MY SQUELCHY LIFE's proposed songs, including the charming collage-like title track, the lengthy album is mostly instrumental. However, it's not at all like Eno's previous ambient work; these 12 songs are emphatically danceable and far less hermetic. Guests include guitarists Robert Fripp, Robert Quine, and Jamie West-Oram; keyboardists John Paul Jones, Benmont Tench, and Roger Eno; and a variety of drummers and percussionists who blend club-scene techno with exotic world music accents. The brief, gentle solo keyboard piece "Appendix: Decentre" adds a becalmed coda, but this frantic, polyglot album deserves the often self-contradictory list of adjectives presented in the liner notes.
For the record, Nerve Net was not Brian Eno's first attempt at rock & roll. Not counting his time with Roxy Music, he also made several solo albums in the 1970s that were clearly intended as approaches to pop music -- they were sideways approaches, of course, shaped by the intellectual distance ...

$9.85 YIP/JUMP MUSIC is primitively recorded, as Johnston provides musical accompaniment with cheap keyboards. However, his sense of pop dynamics, hooks, and song structure help bring about song after memorable song.
