| | Captain Beyond CD (1972)
Locked In/New England
$8.15 Captain Beyond is a one-of-a-kind progressive album with rock, heavy metal, and jazz influences with a "space rock" lyrical bend. Formed by former members of Deep Purple (Rod Evans, vocals), Iron Butterfly (Rhino, lead guitar, and Lee Dorman, bass), and Johnny Winter (Bobby Caldwell, drums) Captain Beyond is an album that flows from riff to riff, drumbeat to drumbeat, often with various time signatures within the same song. Taking a tip from the Moody Blues, songs flow directly into each other without benefit of any lag time between selections. Taken as a whole, the album is kind of a rush, as quick, riff-laden guitar lines predominate for a few songs before slowing down temporarily into a lull until the next takeoff. Lyrically, the album differentiates itself by exploring themes of the outer world and meanings of existence, often with references to the moon, sea, sun, and so on. ...

| | Blues Image Open CD (1970)
Locked In/New England
$11.59 Blues Image's second album was their most successful, in large part because of the inclusion of their huge hit single "Ride Captain Ride." The rest of the record, however, shows them to be a band in search of a more individual voice, borrowing heavily as it does from Jimi Hendrix ("Love Is the Answer," "Pay My Dues"), Creedence Clearwater Revival ("Running the Water"), any number of average blues-rock bands ("Clean Love"), and the Latin-rock fusion of Santana ("La Bamba," "Consuelate," and the instrumental "Wrath of Daisey"). Those familiar only with "Ride Captain Ride" might be surprised at the band's versatility, which took in blues, Latin, and hard rock, though not in as even or striking a mixture as, say, Santana. It's a pedestrian form of versatility, though, with none of the other songs possessing the pop hooks ...

| | Best Of Anthony Newley CD (2001) (Import) United Kingdom
Locked In/New England
$11.99 The upper class pop of Anthony Newley has proved inspirational for several generations of songwriters, and this 20-track compilation offers a taster of his well-crafted songs.
There were so many different aspects of Anthony Newley's long career, including a lengthy discography, that a single-disc compilation of his recordings restricted to the archives of one record label is necessarily incomplete. In 1959, a 27-year-old Newley became an unlikely pop star in the U.K. thanks to his starring role in the movie musical Idle on Parade, in which he played a pop star patterned on Elvis Presley. The ballad "I've Waited So Long" from the film took off for the Top Ten, and Newley followed it with 12 more British chart entries on Decca Records through 1962. All of them are included on Decca's Best of Anthony Newley, in chronological order. (The Idle on Parade EP is represented by its title track.) They include his covers of the American hits "Personality" (Lloyd Price) and "Why?" (Frankie Avalon), along with "Do You Mind," from his subsequent film Let's Get Married, plus novelties like "Strawberry Fair" and "Pop Goes the Weasel" that are straight out of the British music hall tradition. By the early '60s, Newley was writing his own material with partner Leslie Bricusse, and one of his last Top 40 hits was the standard "What Kind of Fool Am I?" from their musical Stop the World - I Want to Get Off. The 20-track ...
