Rock n' Soul features a whole LP of oldies covers with guitar-heavy '60s arrangements, including such standards as "That'll Be the Day," "Kansas City," "Hound Dog," "Lonely Weekends," "I Got a Woman," and the then-recent "Dancin' in the Streets." It's decently played and sung, but not among the Everlys' most creative work, or even among their most interesting material of the mid-'60s. It's also not quite as good as the similar album they would release later in 1965, Beat & Soul. The version of "Love Hurts," incidentally, is a different, more rock-oriented version than the ballad arrangement they had recorded a few years previously. ~ Richie Unterberger Everly Brothers Rock 'N Soul Songs Rock 'N Soul Review

Rock 'N Soul album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and ...

| | J J Jackson But It's Alright CD (1967)
Rock 'N Soul music CDs
$9.95 Soul belter J.J. Jackson is best known for his 1967 smash, "But It's Alright," but he has some fine singles and a couple of excellent albums as well, and 1967's But It's Alright on the Calla label is one of them. Kicking off with the infectious title track, the record alternates between flat-out rockers like "I Dig Girls," "Come See Me (I'm Your Man)" (which was written by Jackson, covered by the Pretty Things, and then reclaimed powerfully here), and "Boogaloo Baby," midtempo groovers like "You've Got Me Dizzy" and "The Stones ...

| | Everly Brothers Sing Great Country Hits CD (1963)
Rock 'N Soul album
$10.49 The Everly Brothers' homage to some of the best country songs of their era (and their authors and originators) seems like a no-brainer today, and ought to be regarded as a classic record, right up there with their own Roots, not to mention as beloved as anything by the Louvin Brothers or even, say, the Brown's Ferry Four in its sheer beauty and simplicity. Instead, partly thanks to the early Warner ...

Rock 'N Soul album
$6.59 OLGA VIVA, VIVA OLGA was nominated for the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Merengue Performance.
OLGA VIVA, VIVA OLGA won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Merengue Album.
As WEA Latina often did during Olga Tañón's off years, the label issued a stopgap release in 1999 -- just in time for the holiday season, of course. That year's stopgap, Olga Viva, Viva Olga, is a colorful live recording from a show Tañón performed at House of Blues, Orlando, FL. The recording was released on CD as well as video. It's a colorful recording because of Tañón's zeal: she injects a lot of energy into her performance and goes out of her way to interact with the rapturous audience. Her zeal, along with the set list of fan favorites, compensates somewhat for the poor mixing of the recording. The music never quite stands out like it should, as none of the instruments sound in relief from one another, as if the show were recorded through a single channel and subsequently unmixed. Needless to say, these performances may be full of zeal, but they don't sound nearly as invigorating as their more illuminated studio counterparts. If you don't care ...
| | 90 Day Men Panda Park CD (2004)
Rock 'N Soul CD music
$13.95 Panda Park is an undeniably brilliant record that finds an uncompromising, always striving-to-evolve band totally on top of its game. This is what Aladdin Sane might sound like, had he gone into hiding in 1974 only to re-emerge three decades later in a Chicago indie rock outfit. To Everybody may have hinted at the direction the 90 Day Men would take with Panda Park, but it still comes as a shock -- the group has gone from being confounding post-hardcore to defining what could be called post-piano pop. They mash Warm Jets-era ...
