Live Recording
Personnel includes: Sonny Stitt (saxophone); Don Patterson (Hammond B-3 organ); Billy James (drums). Recorded live at the Famous Ballroom, Baltimore, Maryland on March 21, 1971. Includes liner notes by Joel Dorn. Digitally remastered by Gene Paul & SCott Paul (DB Plus Digital Services, NewYork, New York). This is part of Label M's Live At The Left Bank series. Personnel: Sonny Stitt (saxophone); Don Patterson (organ); Billy James (drums). The second of two premier releases from Label M and the archives of The Left Bank Jazz Society of Baltimore, MD (along with My Foolish Heart from Stan Getz). One of Sonny Stitt's many performances for The Left Bank was recorded in March 1971 and is the source of this set. Stitt's electric saxophone, of course, is the main attraction. And while the treatment of the instrument scuttles some of its tone, with Stitt at the mouthpiece (he was the first to record the instrument, back in 1966), the electric tenor sax is more than just a novelty. The traditional "John Brown's Body" proves to be the set's highlight. ~ John Duffy
CMJ (10/2/00, p.30) - "...Captures the group on a hot night in 1971....Stitt's use of the electric saxophone now sounds more like a soulful synthesizer or keyboard..." The 15 tracks on the duo's torrid debut are, like the Bronx that they call home, a melting pot, where beats and accents combust into multiple, diverse flavors, the attitude is both tough and sweet, and each layer reveals sensations that are at once familiar yet utterly new. It's a group effort, populated by ...
