Johnny B. Goode is a compilation on Rex, the Sony BMG partnership label for reissues. It's budget but offers solid material from Johnny Winter's early years with Columbia, from "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" and "Still Alive and Well" to "Stray Cat Blues," "I'll Drown in My Tears," and his trademark version of "Rollin' & Tumblin'." The early Winter band featured Tommy Shannon and Uncle John Turner (who late formed the rhythm section of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble and the Arc Angels). Winter's brother Edgar appears here as well. This is a solid portrait of Johnny Winter as he was hitting his stride and changing the face of electric blues-rock. ~ Thom Jurek Johnny B. Goode Review

Johnny B. Goode album
$14.29 JERUSALEM was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
For a singer-songwriter who proclaims himself "somewhat to the left of Mao" it's no surprise that Steve Earle has drawn the ire of the right for challenging the status quo, particularly around the one-year anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks. The bone of conention on his 2002 outing JERUSALEM is "John Walker's Blues," a moody, mid-tempo number that attempts to explore the reasoning behind "American Taliban" John Walker Lindh's actions. It triggered a wave of knee-jerk reactions accusing Earle of being everything from the second coming of Hanoi Jane to a washed-up anti-American opportunist.
Conservatives will likewise scoff at his trenchant commentaries on illegal immigration (the Augie Meyers-flavored Tex-Mex shuffle "What's A Simple Man To Do") and the transformation of baby boomers from idealistic revolutionaries to self-absorbed merchants of greed (the chugging rocker "Amerika v. 6.0 [The Best We Can Do]). Earle brifely changes gears to duet with Emmylou Harris on the gorgeous lament "I Remember You," and wields ...

| | Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown Real Life CD (1987)
Johnny B. Goode music CDs
$14.29 Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown has been stretching the definition of blues since the late 1940s, when his seminal Peacock recordings first hinted at his category-defying blend of swing, R&B, jazz, and countrified twang. 1987's REAL LIFE serves up the Texas master's pan-roots aesthetic with sophistication, soul, and panache. Recorded live, REAL LIFE offers studio quality sound and polish, with all the improvisatory glee and spontaneous energy of a concert performance.
On cuts such as the Peacock favorite "Okie Dokie Stomp" and the finger-popping jump blues title track, Brown demonstrates that his fretboard-melting fingers are still in excellent shape. On "Catfish," he breaks out his violin for a string of inventive solos, proving the instrument (in the right hands, of course) as capable of soulful, bluesy wailing as any. Like most of his '80s and '90s recordings, the personnel here includes an R&B big band, complete with a fat, sassy horn section that provides hard-swinging muscle on favorites such as "Take The A Train" and a funky, gear-shifting "St. Louis Blues." The combination of the band's slick, punchy sound and Brown's dazzling axe-work and throaty, down-home vocals adds up to a thoroughly satisfying dose of real American roots music.
