Co-founded by Peter Gabriel in 1965, Genesis quickly became one of the forerunners of the prog-rock genre with their near-symphonic pop and highly theatrical live shows. Drummer Phil Collins assumed stewardship of the band when Gabriel quit in 1975, leading Genesis out of the clubs and into the stadiums of the world with a commercial savvy that combined their older psychedelic leanings with a newer populist edge.
