Zenology album
$13.49 Glory to the Brave is indeed a classic power metal record -- no frills or progressive elements here, just speed-laden, melodic, grandiose anthems about honor, glory, and slaying dragons. And the group manages to generally steer clear of the campiness that plagued bands like Manowar. Of note are the pro-Crusades lyrics of "Steel Meets Steel," atypical sentiments in a genre known for rebelling against religion. Overall this stuff isn't new or groundbreaking, but it's performed passionately enough that you'd think you were starting to experience the New Wave of British Heavy Metal the first time around. Hammerfall also gets points for covering Warlord's long-lost classic "Child of the Damned." ~ Bryan Reesman

| | Vandenberg CD (1982)
Zenology music CDs
$9.69 Legend has it after a failed audition with mega-group Thin Lizzy, Adrian Vandenberg went back to the drawing board and decided to start his own band. Poised with an axe to grind and several hard rock influences easily spotted from a mile away, Vandenberg and his band of gypsies were poised to take over the hard rock scene with their 1982 debut. Overall, Vandenberg is a fiery testament to Vandenberg's skill as a guitarist. He shreds with the best of them, taking cues from Hendrix, Page, and a little bit of Tony Iommi. Of course there are the gratuitous moments of guitar acrobatics ("Wait") ...

| | Popa Chubby Stealing The Devil's Guitar CD (2006)
Zenology album
$14.55 Nothing if not prolific (this is Popa Chubby's sixth set of original material in six years), the New York City-based guitarist nonetheless scores with fresh, often inspired material on this outing, Stealing the Devil's Guitar. He has already shown he can push past the rather strict boundaries of blues-rock by gradually infusing hip-hop, Latin, Southern swamp, and even reggae influences, and continues to do so throughout 12 new songs, along with a cover of Jessie Mae Hemphill's "In This World." Chubby loves to ride a chunky riff and he serves up a tasty selection of them here. The instrumental "Kinda Dicey" is a perfect example; it's a tough, sticky, funky groove, ideal for Chubby's licks. Same with the strutting "Smuggler's Blues," a story of the titular character who is both desperate and determined, with a smoking guitar solo that mirrors its narrator's intensity to get his job done. Chubby's gutsy, talk-singing vocals go a long way to differentiate him from the pack as his ominous voice conveys the rather demonic aspects of these songs. Lucifer sandwiches the disc as he shows up on the opening "Slide Devil Man Slide" that, not surprisingly, displays the guitarist's ability to sizzle on slide guitar. The closing instrumental title track also drives on a hefty riff, this one with a touch of Spaghetti Western mixed with surf that never lets up its tension during its six-and-a-half minute playing time. On the other side of the philosophical pew is "Preacher Man," who in this case seems to be in league with the devil on a conga-driven, slinky workout that makes the preacher sound as sinister as any sinner in town. Chubby's creepy slide guitar conveys the concept even without the lyrics "drop to your knees, pay tribute to the Lord, give me all you got to give, make a contribution to the preacher man." At a hefty hour, the disc would be stronger if it dropped a few tracks, especially the vaguely misogynist "Virgil & Smokey," a story-song of two dogs on the street looking for some tail. But with tracks as effortlessly melodic as the soulful reggae of "Back in My Baby's Arms," it's easy to give Chubby a pass on some of the less compelling tunes on an album that not only ranks ...

| | Knights Of The Abyss Juggernaut CD (2007)
Zenology music CDs
$12.09 There are some extreme metal discs that, for all their brutality, still value nuance, melody, and songcraft. Others, however, favor sensory assault for the sake of sensory assault, which is exactly what one gets on Knights of the Abyss' debut album, Juggernaut. With a name like Knights of the Abyss, one might expect an epic type of album -- perhaps symphonic black metal or Viking metal, perhaps some type of grandiose melodic death metal that liberally incorporates elements of power metal and progressive rock. Instead, what transpires on this 2007 release is best described as a ferocious, skull-smashing blend of technical metalcore (metalcore meets math rock) and death metal with occasional hints of black metal. Tempo changes are frequent, and Knights of the Abyss not only go out of their way to be as abrasive as possible -- they also make a point of being extremely chaotic. All of the vocals are extreme vocals, but this Arizona-based band does not stick to one extreme vocal style exclusively. Some of the vocals favor death metal's "cookie monster" growl, while others are somewhere between a black metal rasp and metalcore screaming -- and the Knights' ability to constantly go back and forth between the different extreme vocal styles adds to the vicious chaos. Those looking for nuance or musicality will not find it here; the goal of this 35-minute disc is to beat, pummel, bruise, and batter listeners as much of this possible -- and make no mistake: a lot of battering occurs ...
