Sissy Spacek, Tommy Lee Jones, and Beverly D'Angelo star in this film about Loretta Lynn. Extras include complete restored audio with enhanced 5.1 track, commentary, interviews with Jones, Lynn, and director Michael Apted, and salute to the film and AFI by George Bush Sr. This biographical drama of Loretta Lynn, country music's grand dame, traces the highs and lows of her career from rustic Appalachia to stardom. The film, directed by the English director Michael Apted (NELL), stars Sissy Spacek in an Oscar-winning performance as Lynn. Tommy Lee Jones plays her husband, Doolittle, and Beverly D'Angelo appears as Patsy Cline. The story of Loretta Lynn, COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER charts the rise of the queen of country music from her upbringing in backwoods Appalachia to stardom at the Grand Ole Opry. One of eight children, she married at age 13 and was a mother of four at age 20. Shy and naive, she was pushed into music by her husband, Doolittle, who gave her a guitar instead of a ring for their wedding, in what was to be a career that also tracked her complicated relationship with this man. His strengths helped her create numerous hit singles, but his weaknesses inspired such immortal songs as "You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man." Sissy Spacek won an Oscar for her virtuoso performance, mimicking Lynn's voice nearly perfectly, while Beverly D'Angelo solidly impersonates Patsy Cline; unlike other music biographies, this film features both actors using their own voices in the singing scenes. Country music legend Ernest Tubb also makes a cameo. For director Michael Apted, COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER is one in a series of films--AGATHA, GORILLAS IN THE MIST, and NELL--he has made about strong, eccentric women. Theatrical release: February 22, 1980.
Shot on location in Kentucky and Tennessee.
COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER grossed about $35 million at the domestic box office, making it the seventh highest grossing film in 1979.
Although some crew members thought that Apted grew up in a community of coal miners in northern England, he actually grew up in London, the son of an insurance inspector.
Lynn's first single, "I'm A Honky Tonk Girl," debuted on June 13, 1960. She has since had a total of 77 singles chart in the 20th century.
Lynn's 100-acre house in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee (which was depicted in the film), became a tourist attraction in the 1970s. The complex includes a replica of the cabin she grew up in, an RV park, a course for dirt bikes, a gigantic wooden Indian, riding trails, a hayride wagon, and a concert hall. She is planning to build a museum on the complex, to include props from the film and a bottle of the last pint of whiskey she hid from her husband.
Doolittle developed diabetes and lost the use of his legs, sight, and hearing. He passed away in 1996.
Beverly D'Angelo did the voice of Lurleen Lumpkin in a spoof of COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER on THE SIMPSONS. In the episode, Homer becomes a country music manager. Lumpkin's songs include "Your Wife Doesn't Understand You," "Bunk With Me Tonight," and "Stand By Your Manager."
Academy Award Nominations: 7, including Best Picture, Best (Adapted) Screenplay.
Academy Awards: Best Actress--Sissy Spacek.
Coal Miner's Daughter Quotes/Excerpts: "If you born in the mountains, you got three choices: coal mine, moonshine, or moving on down the line."--Lee (William Sanderson) to Doolittle (Tommy Lee Jones)
"This pie ain't the only thing salty about you."--Doolittle to Loretta (Sissy Spacek)
Coal Miner's Daughter Reviews: "...A thoughtful, endearing film....Both Spacek and D'Angelo deserve a special nod of credit for doing all of their own singing with style and accuracy..."

Coal Miner's Daughter film
$7.45 In Karel Reisz's SWEET DREAMS, Jessica Lange stars as Patsy Cline, the ill-fated country singer whose trembling, emotion packed renditions of "Crazy," "Sweet Dreams," and "I Fall to Pieces," made her one the most enduring voices in all of American popular music. Starting out by performing more standard country songs in little dives and honky-tonks in Virginia, Patsy rose to national prominence after her manager Ted Healy matched her voice to her now famous bittersweet love songs. Unfortunately, her own love life often mirrored the sadness in her songs. We see her choose to "stand by her man," as Loretta Lynn sang in COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER. That film, similar to SWEET DREAMS in that it's another country singer's bio that shows us the professional success and personal heartache of women during the 1950s. Save for the music, this could be any woman's story of a love-hate marriage. Patsy's ...

$7.05 Martin Ritt's HUD is an adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel HORSEMAN, PASS BY, successfully transformed into an entertaining and ambitious contemporary Western. Set on a Texas ranch where Cadillacs, cattle, and transistor radios coexist uneasily, the film stars Paul Newman as the hedonistic, arrogant, and rebellious farmhand Hud Bannon. Hud is constantly at odds with his kind father Homer (Melvyn Douglas), who blames him for the death of his brother. Hud further strains their relationship when he begins taking his nephew out drinking and chasing women. But when it appears that Homer's herd of cattle may have contracted hoof-and-mouth disease, he asks his son's help and advice. Predictably, Homer ...

$19.55 Director Masahiko Murata seamlessly incorporates elements of ancient mythology into a futuristic epic of post-apocalyptic chaos in his sci-fi anime GILGAMESH. Sometime during the 21st century, a terrorist act destroys a scientific research facility built over the tomb of the ancient Sumerian king Gilgamesh. Occurring on October 10th, the catastrophic event is dubbed Twin X (for its date, 10-10) and produces an earth-wide electromagnetic imbalance that transforms the sky into an undulating swirl of color known as "the Sheltering Sky." As war, famine, and disease wreak havoc on the weakened planet, two supernatural forces engage in a life-or-death struggle for world domination: Orga, a band of mutant psychics led by a mysterious countess; and Gilgamesh, an army of winged assassins under the charge of the evil scientist who triggered Twin X, Enkidu. Thrust into this calamitous milieu are orphaned brother and sister Kiyoko and Tatsuya, ...

Coal Miner's Daughter DVD
$13.59 Resisting the temptations that so many recent kids' movies have succumbed to, CURIOUS GEORGE stays true to the innocently playful spirit of the beloved, brilliantly simple children's books by H.A. Rey, eschewing ironic asides, gross-out comedy, and pop culture references. Barely acknowledging the parents and guardians in the audience, the filmmakers talk directly--and effectively--to their target viewers: young children. And much like the tone and story it complements, the bright and colorful animation is distinctly old-fashioned, paying tribute to the books, appealing to kids, and adding to the movie's retro charms.
In the film, the Man in the Yellow Hat (now named Ted) is a geeky museum guide, winningly voiced by Will Ferrell, whose relatively restrained performance here is actually less cartoonish than many of his previous flesh-and-blood roles. He travels to Africa in an attempt to obtain a huge ancient ruin that could save his struggling museum, which the owner's son (the inherently funny David Cross) wants to turn ...
