| | Catherine Jauniaux Fluvial CD Catherine Jauniaux Discography of CDs
FLUVIAL is one of the most successful purely experimental albums ever recorded. The Belgian avant-garde singer Catherine Jauniaux travelled in the same British art rock circles which included Henry Cow and Art Bears. FLUVIAL is actually a collaboration with ex-Henry Cow Tim Hodgkinson who co-wrote all the songs and plays various instruments. That acoustic British avant-folk background serves the recording well too--FLUVIAL has a light magical quality about it, in contrast to the more erratic pop stylings of another French-speaking experimentalist, Brigitte Fontaine.

Due to physical ailments, swing-era veteran and acclaimed trumpeter Buck Clayton stopped performing in the late 1960s, but his talents as an arranger can be heard on this 1974 outing. In addition to Clayton's swinging, well-conceived charts, A BUCK CLAYTON JAM SESSION is a bona fide all-star session. Pianist Earl Hines leads the ...

| | Mungo Jerry Baby Jump: The Definitive Collection CD (2005) (Import)
Fluvial music CDs
$36.79 Hmmm, "definitive," you say? Well, let's see. The need for a truly all-encompassing Mungo Jerry collection has been evident ever since the early '90s brought the first in the long line of CD compilations that simply followed the same laws as the LPs that preceded them -- here are the hits, here's the odd B-side, here are a couple of randomly selected album tracks. Mungo Jerry meant so much more than that, even if that brief does sum up most listeners' total knowledge of the band's output. With 60 tracks at its disposal, Baby Jump certainly comes close to the ideal. Concentrating ...
| | Billy Idol Devil's Playground CD (2005) Japan
Fluvial songs
$36.99 DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND is that rarest of items, a comeback attempt that actually works. Previously, Billy Idol had taken a dozen-year respite from recording, conceivably recovering from the aesthetic trainwreck of 1993's woefully misguided techno-rock attempt, CYBERPUNK. The year 2005 found the former MTV pinup finally regaining his crown as sneering rock & roll bad boy. The punk-inflected, occasionally metal-tinged hard rock that leaps off this disc is in no small part made possible by the return of Idol's longtime foil, guitarist Steve Stevens, who helped make Idol's '80s hits so memorable. Together, they craft a sound more unrelentingly full-throttle than anything else in Idol's catalog. While there are hooks aplenty, the raging guitars and kamikaze drums rarely halt their rampage until near the end of the disc, when things slow down slightly for a couple of semi-ballads. Ultimately, DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND almost seems closer in spirit to Idol's work with the original pop-punks, Generation X, than to his more commercial solo recordings.
The most remarkable thing about the 12-year wait between Billy Idol's fifth album, Cyberpunk, and his sixth, Devil's Playground, isn't the enormity of the gap between records, it's that almost nobody noticed that he was gone. Such was the magnitude of Cyberpunk's failure -- it erased him from popular consciousness, shaming Billy into an ignoble exile where he barely seemed to register outside of a cameo in Adam Sandler's The Wedding Singer. Frankly, the muddled William Gibson-inspired techno-rock mess did carry a rancid stench that would take over a decade to shake, but the odd thing about Devil's Playground isn't that Billy pretends Cyberpunk doesn't exist -- frankly, any artist with sense would do that -- it's that he now pretends that he's always been a metalhead, as if his posturing in the '80s was more than an affectation. With his trusty sidekick guitarist Steve Stevens in tow, Idol cranks up the volume and never lets it slide, even on the infrequent ballads. Occasionally, they lighten things up a touch and wind up with some killer tunes -- in particular, "Sherri" is a terrific pop song, while the lively, acoustic-driven "Cherie" is a deft delight (is it a coincidence that the titles are nearly identical?). On this ...
