Based on the acclaimed autobiographical one-man show by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, this tuneful film is an inspiring coming-of-age drama that concerns a mother and son's love that transcends biological ties. It is the story of Rachel "Nanny" Crosby (S. Epatha Merkerson), a woman who built a community and circumvented segregation in her own determined way. Like a good blues song, the film strikes notes taht are painful but beautiful - ones that remain alive to both the heartbreaks and joys of life. Marcus Carl Franklin, Mos Def, Carmen Ejogo, Louis Gossett Jr., Macy Gray, Terrence Dashon Howard, Delroy Lindo, Rosie Perez, Liev Schreiber, Jimmy Smits, and Jeffrey Wright also star. The plot of LACKAWANNA BLUES takes viewers back to a turbulent time for the African American community, all set to a soaring R&B soundtrack from an awesome selection of artists. Originally shot for HBO, LACKAWANNA BLUES is based on a one-man play by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, and is a moving coming-of-age tale. Drawing on his own experiences, Santiago-Hudson begins his story as a child growing up in the small New York town of Lackawanna. There, he is raised by Rachel "Nanny" Crosby (S. Epatha Merkerson), who provides a refuge for many wandering black folks whose lives have not quite turned out as they wished. Nanny and the residents educate Ruben in a way that no conventional schooling can provide, with the film lovingly painting a poignant slice of life from these heavily segregated times. Merkerson is exceptional as Nanny, while the ensemble cast also includes big hitters such as Rosie Perez and Mos Def among its line up.

Lackawanna Blues Movie Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Lackawann Blues - A Place Worth Remembering What a wonderful African-American story! For those who can relate to Lackawanna Blues, it will make you nostalgic and appreciative of the efforts of those African-American ancestors who did everything they could to protect their families from the ugliness of a segregated society.
I spent my summers as a happy young child and teenager in a vibrant black community in a segregated town called Bluefield, WV. This community had black-owned mom & pop stores, barber shops, beauty parlors, funeral parlors, soda fountain shops, segregated schools—you name it, our community had it. My cousins, siblings, and I spent many days playing on the grounds of the all black Bluefield College which was only blocks away from my grandparents’ homes. We lived among people who were employed as doctors, lawyers, teachers, coal miners, Pullman porters, janitors, housekeepers, as well as poor families on welfare.
But most important, our community was full of “salt of the earth” African-American men and women, like Nannie, who took care of anyone in need. We also had our share of neighborhood “characters” much like those living in Nannie’s boarding house.
As children, and like Rueben, we were made aware of segregation and racism by the stories told to us by our parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, etc. But the adults in our lives, like Nannie, did a darn good job of making sure that the residue of segregation and racism did not permeate our daily lives and pathologize our African-American existence.
Like Santiago’s Lackawanna, the Bluefield I knew no longer exists…done in by integration and “black flight” of its residents to other towns and cities.
Again, for those who can identify with Rueben’s story, add this movie to your collection and when you get a little homesick, pop it in and escape to a place, a time, and a people worth remembering.

Family Archive Addition We purchased "Lackawanna Blues" to add it to our family archives. We look frequently watching this TV film because it is wonderfully written, acted, directed and produced. The behind-the-scenes work that went into this production such as casting, the costumes, music, set design, the direction and the cinematography make this a classic that I want my grandchildren to know. In my opinion, this autobiography of the writer/storyteller, Ruben Santiago-Hudson ranks right up there with "Roots" by Alex Hailey. Submitted by hgarner (Rio Vista, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Lackawanna Blues is great! I have seen the movie several times, and each time I enjoy it. The music and the actors were very entertaining, and gave a glipse of how things use to be for negroes in cities everywhere. I would like to see the city of Lakawanna make mention of the movie and the play. Submitted by Oldsdomicile (Richmond, VA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
