| | Deep Dish George Is On CD Deep Dish Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Initial release includes an enhanced bonus disc. Enhancements include videos for "Say Hello" and "Flashdance."
Seven years after their last album of original productions and eight long months after the leadoff single "Flashdance" stormed the clubs, Deep Dish returned with George Is On. A slicker, more extroverted effort than their 1998 effort Junk Science, George Is On finds that album's main vocalist/lyricist Richard Morel back with the duo. The guitar-heavy "Sacramento" is one of the best cuts yet to come from the relationship, with the more laid-back and foggy "Everybody's Wearing My Head" running a close second. Besides Morel, plenty of hypnotic, nocturnal instrumentals recall the duo's well-respected debut, but the flippant, cheeky "Flashdance" and a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" with Stevie Nicks guesting explore the worlds of anthems and arguably camp, something that's been slowly developed on the multiple Deep Dish mix albums that have appeared since their proper debut. The mash-up of "Flashdance" and Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing" that closes the track list is only a bit clever and entirely anti-climatic if the listener considers it part of the album instead of a throwaway bonus. Otherwise, George Is On may be a shade too comfortable for anyone thinking Deep Dish should always sound like the future, but the album is as well crafted as Junk Science and a lot more fun. ~ David Jeffries

George Is On Music Review Purchase George Is On CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Paul Butterfield Blues Band CD (1965)
George Is On
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
George Is On
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
George Is On
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion ...
| | Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (2005)
George Is On
$10.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," a jangly, upbeat tune featuring My Morning Jacket's Jim James on backing vocals. Throughout the record, Oberst reaches nearly hysterical peaks, seemingly overcome with emotion as his wavering voice, which often recalls Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano, veers almost, but not quite, out of control. ...
| | Paul Van Dyk Politics Of Dancing, Vol. 2 CDs (2005)
George Is On
$12.55 It differs little from his previous releases, but Paul Van Dyk's The Politics of Dancing, Vol. 2 is a satisfying argument that trance isn't dead and not even on life support. One bit of newness is the speed at which Van Dyk discards tracks on disc one's mix, a 17-song epic journey into uplifting, atmospheric dancefloor dreaminess. Theatrical stops and starts feature into every one of these blissful numbers, but Van Dyk keeps things moving at a pace such that the listener probably won't notice the gimmicky device is being overused. Otherwise, everything is tasteful with vocal numbers that don't get too precious and just enough Benny Benassi-styled electro to let you know this is 2005 and not 2000. Wayne Jackson's earthy vocals make Van Dyk's own "The Other Side" the album's song to remember while opening the more sprawling disc two. The drops followed by buildups are back for the second set, but the ...

| | Kathy Kallick Warmer Kind Of Blue CD (2005)
George Is On
$12.95 When it comes to bluegrass, old-timey, and folk, there are many variations and cross pollinations that are only appreciated by insiders. The Kathy Kallick Band's A Warmer Kind of Blue will probably be filed in the bluegrass section at the local record mart, but the album is too expansive and creative to be seen as just another bluegrass album. Sure, "That's How I Can Count On You" will probably remind listeners of a number of other bluegrass songs featuring a female lead. But even here, at the album's most typical moment, Kallick never sounds as though she's trying to position herself as another Alison Krauss or Rhonda Vincent. Instead, her vocal style could be described as natural. Kallick adds lots of soul to a song like "God Gave Noah the Rainbow Sign" without feeling that she needs to add ...
| | Ludacris Red Light District CD (2004) Import
George Is On
$28.29 It's fitting that Ludacris would unveil one of the last major albums of 2004. He is one of the wittiest personalities in hip-hop, only rivaled in the one-liner department by Eminem, and the most downright fun rapper in the business.
Ludacris opens with a wry rant on the industry, a common theme, but he uniquely combines the self-aware eye of a writer with the continually scheming nature of a hustler. It is said that when comic actors perform drama, they often excel at it, and Ludacris translates this to the music world. When he gets serious on the reflective "Child of the Night," he shines, honestly pondering both his life and the craziness of the world. However, the bulk of THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT is a party, as the Atlanta MC lets ...

George Is On
$22.79 What do you imagine when you think of steel drums? Well...think again.Put away your flowered shirt and your white shoes. This ain't Margaritaville. And it ain't Jamaica either.Based in Seattle, Bakra Bata' rhythmically brings together the sounds of celebration and life, they groove on sensuality and love, and with precision they strike the soul with the percussive sounds of Brazil, Africa, Cuba, and Haiti. In 1984 the band began as street performers, elbowing competitors to the side and staging their own premiere appearances in front of Nordstrom's and (at the time) the country's only Starbuck's, in downtown Seattle. After years of waiting out the rain, Bakra Bata' bought a truck and hit the festival and college circuits.Today, the band's performance history includes four performances at New York's Lincoln Center, opening for Zap Mama, Tito Puente, and Milton Nasciemento at the Houston International Festival, ...
