Atlantic Bridge's sole, self-titled LP is respectable but somewhat middling early fusion, though as a 1970 release, it's more cutting-edge than it would have been had it come out a few years later, when their brand of fusion was pretty common. Jim Philip's sax playing is certainly the most striking and fiery aspect of their approach, owing a good deal to the free jazz of John Coltrane and the like. Daryl Runswick also creates some interesting passages with bowed bass. The covers of "MacArthur Park," "Something," and "Dear Prudence" stretch those songs into considerably different shapes, but the record's six pieces do meander sometimes. The 1999 reissue on Get Back adds two songs from their 1971 EP, I Cant Lie to You, one of which ("I Can't Lie to You" itself) is quite a departure from the rest of their work, as it features soul-rock vocals by several female singers. ~ Richie Unterberger

It's not surprising that Steely Dan co-founder Walter Becker's debut solo album sounds like a Steely Dan record. What is a little surprising, though, is that, in his lead singing debut, he sounds so much like his erstwhile partner, Donald Fagen. Not that you'd mistake the two (Fagen projects more and is slightly grittier), but they sing in the same register with the same sly phrasing and the same accent. Other differences from the Dan are equally subtle: Becker adopts a sparer musical approach, for one thing, the missing element being the prominence of Fagen's keyboards (although Fagen does play on the record and co-produced it). Nothing gets in the way of Becker's voice as he restricts himself largely to tales of romantic dislocation. On the whole, this album sounds like what you'd expect -- one half of Steely Dan. ~ William Ruhlmann

For their first album since 1998's MUSICAL CHAIRS, Hootie and the Blowfish enlisted the aid of production doctor Don Was in an effort to get back on track after a four-year layoff that found Darius Rucker and Mark Bryan releasing their own solo efforts. The Saw Doctors' co-leader, singer/guitarist Leo Moran, writes in his liner notes to the band's first live album that, while fans consistently prefer their concerts to their albums, he had opposed releasing a live disc, which he felt couldn't hope to match the experience of being at one of their shows. Giving in, he offers "Apologies for some of the imperfections....There's Davey [Carton] laughing in the middle of singing a good few songs, the backing vocals aren't what they should be a lot of the time and all that kind of stuff." While charmingly self-deprecating, his remarks are not inaccurate; Live in Galway is hardly a polished performance, even if that's only to say that it is closer to being a real live album (i.e., one without studio overdubs) than most. That is less of a problem, however, than that the performance of a show before an enthusiastic hometown crowd ready to sing along on every song exacerbates the group's local (at the expense of its mass) appeal, a worry for a band still trying to replicate its Irish popularity overseas while writing ...
