| | Carl Weingarten Local Journeys CD Carl Weingarten Discography of CDs
Composer, producer, and slide guitarist Carl Weingarten's 2005 release LOCAL JOURNEYS continues the musician's exploration of genre-blending moodscapes. Weingarten's music is highly atmospheric, with spare, trance-y sonic backdrops haunted by percussive pulses and wisps of ghostly slide. This is music that conjures images of deserted, dusty towns and clouds cutting across a blood-red moon, and it is difficult, as a result, to resist employing the adjective "cinematic" when trying to describe the effect this music has.
Yet Weingarten's evocative, image-rich sound-worlds are the best kind: they project their own inner films in the minds of attentive listeners. To its credit, LOCAL JOURNEYS is more of a piece than some of Weingarten's other releases. With the exception of some piano, synthesizer, and light percussion, almost all of the record is strings, including cello, dobro, bass, e-bow, and Weingarten's ubiquitous slide. Moreover, a spectral atmosphere prevails in the hazy textures and Weingarten's reverb-drenched playing, making this fine release a perfect candidate for dreamy headphone listening.
by Glenn Astarita, JazzReview.com"West Coast guitarist Carl Weingarten is a colorist who blends an enviable technique with gobs of emotive sentiment and subtly designed electronic effects. On this endeavor he employs a strings section on selected works, to complement electric bass hero Michael Manring's softly lyrical accompaniment. Weingarten uses various electric slide guitars, dobro and ebow to round out these eclectic, electronic dreamscapes. He uses volume control techniques to leverage his multihued phrasings throughout these pieces that impart a sustaining impression. Elsewhere, the guitarist plucks gentle harmonics while generating endearing, melodic hooks via his supple slide guitar voicings. Weingarten conveys an artsy musical persona, often dappled with poise and a near-flawless mode of execution during these enduring tone poems that beckon repeated listens. (Enthusiastically recommended...)"

$15.39 "The Chairman of the Board" died in May of 1998, yet his music sounds as vital and relevant today as ever. Released on the 10th anniversary of his death--in coordination with a slew of DVD releases commemorating the singer's acting career as well as an official U.S. Postal Service stamp--NOTHING BUT THE BEST provides an excellent look ...

| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Local Journeys music CDs
$13.75 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, ...

Local Journeys CD music
$12.35 It seems incredible that Roberta Gambarini didn't win the Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal Competition but she was new to the U.S., having just arrived from her native Italy. But with each new release, she has demonstrated that she is easily the most accomplished vocalist of the competitors for the prize. Pianist Hank Jones, who knows a thing or two about great singers, refers to her as the "greatest vocalist to come along in the past 60 years." On 2009's SO IN LOVE, with a rhythm section rotating among three talented up-and-coming pianists (Tamir Hendeman, Eric Gunnison, ...
| | His Name Is Alive FT. Lake CD (1998)
Local Journeys music CDs
$15.15 Michigan's His Name Is Alive bristles with art-damaged coyness, but great pop ultimately needs soul--an essence that can't be factored or graphed. Reducing "Good Vibrations" to a template is nothing but a parlor trick. Though FT. LAKE doesn't surrender the ghosts of HNIA's indie past altogether, when Detroit gospel queen Lovetta Pippin lays into "Everything Takes Forever," churning up a chunky, funky froth, the die has been cast for a new direction.
Once the surprise of hearing this erstwhile ethereal troupe pumping out full-blooded soul subsides, FT. LAKE soars. Warren Defever, HNIA's autonomous mastermind, ...
| | Dianne Reeves Bridges CD (1999)
Local Journeys songs
$9.25 BRIDGES was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
Along with jazz-folk diva Cassandra Wilson and mother-of-them-all Abbey Lincoln, the eclectic singer Dianne Reeves is a strong believer in mixing up genres on her albums. It's perhaps the only way to be a "jazz" singer now. Leave the standards-only sets to marginal cabaret belters. Still, a singer with Reeves' formidable chops is sometimes tempted to overdo it, an occupational hazard in current jazz practice. Happily, this intelligent vocalist has the taste and a light enough touch to bring her highly varied programs off with aplomb.
Tunes like Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" and Joni Mitchell's ...
