Another live set from the 1986 tour, Köln could well be the best of the bunch. There is an actual song here (Ronald Shannon Jackson's aptly titled "Brain Damage") and an opening track, the nearly 20-minute rumble called "Hard School," that scorches from top to bottom. This recording was supposed to come after Cassette Recordings '87 and before Iron Path, but Bill Laswell was involved in some rancorous disagreements with Enemy and the record's release was postponed for a couple of years. But man, was it ever worth the wait. Open up and burn. ~ John Dougan

| | Pat Metheny Song X: Twentieth Anniversary CD (1985) Bonus Tracks
Koln CD music
$15.65 The combination of the popular mainstream jazz guitarist Pat Metheny and pioneering free jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman may seem an odd one. However, their collaboration SONG X reflects their mutual admiration and shared sense of adventure. Fans of Metheny's contemporary jazz may find some aspects of this session hard to swallow. Coleman's followers, however, will feel right at home with the jarring dissonance and dense textures. Joining the pair are the equally adventurous drummer Jack DeJohnette, along ...
| | Gregg Karukas Nightshift CD (2000)
Koln music CDs
$13.29 It may have seemed presumptuous for Gregg Karukas to call one of his most popular recordings You'll Know It's Me in 1995, but back then his sugary, ultra-melodic, kick-back-with-a-dash-of-funk keyboard style was truly identifiable from the first few notes of any song. Since then, however, he's pushed the rhythmic and stylistic envelope in so many exciting new directions that the Karukas of 2000 isn't quite the same guy; 1998's Blue Touch lived up to its title by going in what he calls a "bluesy, funky, greasy, and organic" direction, and his NCoded debut, Nightshift -- named, like his 1987 debut, The Nightowl, after his propensity to work vampire-like in his studio all night -- moves even further in that direction. His melodies are still as instantly hummable as ever, but he varies their surroundings to include Crusaders-inspired ...

| | Jeff Johnson Free CD (1999)
Koln CD music
$12.89 Recorded live at the Old Town Ale House in Seattle, WA, Jeff Johnson and his cohorts have fashioned almost an hour's worth of artistic modern music. Expertly performed by these Northwest jazz artists, the play list is well crafted and balanced with four originals by the trio and one each of a jazz and a classic standard. This CD is a set of six cerebral and intense performances that require a commitment on the part of the listener matching that of the performers. While at first blush the pieces may be unabashedly avant-gardish, there are many subtleties that require close attention to enjoy -- for example, Johnson's rumbling basslines underneath the rather meditative saxophone of Hans Teuber on "Chariots for Anthony." This track is also the occasion for lengthy stand-alone drumming by the third member of the group, Billy Mintz. Whether or not Mintz's stark drum rhythms are your cup of tea, he gets high marks for staying ...
| | Ray Barretto Hot Hands CDs (2003)
Koln music CDs
$15.09 HOT HANDS contains the original albums ANCESTRAL MESSAGES (1993) and TABOO (1994).
Concord Jazz did a smashing job on Hot Hands of reissuing two stellar yet under-the-radar Latin jazz albums by Ray Barretto's New World Spirit ensemble of the 1990s. Hot Hands consists of Ancestral Messages, first released in 1993, and Taboo, which was issued the following year. The connection between the two albums goes deeper than chronology. The former is a look back over Barretto's many influences in both Latin Soul, salsa and Afro-Cuban music, and the latter is a new articulation of those influences, resulting in what the percussionist himself called his "most organic album." These are the first two records released by his truly great New World Spirit band, which seeded in equal parts the salsa and tough hard-bop and bebop jazz that Barretto loved. Both albums are loaded with chops, brilliant charts, and deft, even astonishing soloing in places; and then of course there are the rhythms which are so complex yet ...
| | Jessica Williams Live At Yoshi's Vol. 1 CD (2004)
Koln songs
$15.05 Jessica Williams is a swinging jazz pianist and a fine composer. Her recordings showcase her gifts as a jazz technician of rare facility to be sure, but she also possesses the soul of a poet: her playing is deeply expressive and wildly creative. Live at Yoshi's, Vol. 1 was recorded over a two-night run at San Francisco's venerated jazz club in 2003. Williams is accompanied by her brilliant rhythm section: bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Victor Lewis. The sensitive and motivational interplay between the members of this trio is breathtaking throughout. Drummond and Lewis do not merely provide support for Williams, they offer an exceptional and innovative rhythmic bridge for her fleet harmonic and dynamic flights. The nine cuts played here include standards like Loesser and McHugh's "Say It Over and Over Again" and Billy Eckstine's "I Want to Talk About You," all of them played as if they were written specifically for this band. Along the way are many surprises. Take, for ...
