On Kinski's second full-length Sub Pop album, the Seattle quartet refines its instrumental post-rock attack. While the influence of both Sonic Youth and Black Sabbath is still apparent, elements of Krautrock, ambient, and experimental music are more prominent than on past releases. The opener, "Hot Stenographer," is a rocked-out tune that melds Sabbath-like guitar lines with minimalist repetition, while "All Your Kids Have Turned to Static" is an eerie, atmospheric track that recalls the mellower aspects of Mogwai in both sound and its quirky title. The disc's most arresting moments--"The Wives of Artie Shaw" and "The Party Which You Know Will Be Heavy"--feature urgent, soar-and-dive guitar pyrotechnics, courtesy of Matthew Reid-Schwartz and Chris Martin (not to be confused with the Coldplay frontman). A restless and dynamic record, 2005's ALPINE STATIC reveals a band playing to its strengths and crafting, in the process, a punchy, engaging album.

Uncut (p.97) - 4 stars out of 5 - "With riffs that hit the ground running and drumming you could set your watch by..." Magnet (p.100) - "'Hot Stenographer' kicks things off in obsessive fashion, worrying a Golden Earring-like riff to the bone..." The Wire (p.68) - "[A]n intriguing mix of precision layered guitar parts, full-throttle riffing and spacerock excursions." Mojo (Publisher) (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Kinski's heavy psych credentials are impeccable....The quartet's music is exhilarating, unpredictable and occasionally off-the-map." Kinski Alpine Static Songs Alpine Static Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) There is still great music to discover This band moves to the head of my list for recently released and well reviewed albums. (Others are Supergrass/New Pornographers/Dead Meadow)
Simply stated, if you like rock music, especially guitar based 70's rock, Sonic Youth, Pink or Pink Floyd then you must buy this record.
Being all instrumental, some may immediately lose interest, please don't, this record is full of surprises from start to finish. It's cliched, but in a perfect world you would be hearing 4 or 5 of these songs on the radio. I can't believe this band is such a well kept secret.
I have only listened to this in my car and can't wait to unleash it on my home audio system. Some reviews at Amazon say their earlier material is better but I am happy to have started here. You may want to do the same.
With the state of rock today, I just want to say thanks to Kinski for this gift. Submitted by paulloflin (Huntington Beach, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Alpine Static album
$11.75 Kinski's excellently named Airs Above Your Station picks up where Be Gentle With the Warm Turtle left off, mixing alternately buzzing and shimmering guitars and subtle electronic flourishes into eight epics that bridge post-rock and space rock. As with its previous work, on this album Kinski's style is remarkably linear; most of the tracks embellish one or two themes apiece instead of linking different but related ideas. Sometimes this works: the hypnotic, 11-minute "Schedule for Using Pillows & Beanbags" features a delicate guitar line that hardens into a see-sawing riff that repeats over and over, while hissing synths and drums fall in and out of the mix. "Waves of Second Guessing" also makes good use of Kinski's approach, pairing five minutes of lighter-than-air guitar drone with a surprisingly heavy finale. Just as often, though, this elongated, ...

| | Decemberists Picaresque CD (2005)
Alpine Static music CDs
$14.29 The Decemberists' third full-length release takes the fanciful lyrical subjects and defiantly non-rock musical tendencies of CASTAWAYS AND CUT-OUTS and HER MAJESTY THE DECEMBERISTS and infuses them with the more muscular and electric sound of the 2003 mini-concept album, THE TAIN. The combination provides singer/songwriter Colin Meloy and crew with their first true masterpiece, an album that not only fulfills, but exceeds, the promise of their earlier records.
Meloy's pet obsessions with historical romance and the sea get their due, culminating in the nearly nine-minute suite "The Mariner's Revenge Song," but he also examines more real-world topics in the Morrissey-like ...

| | It's Immaterial Life's Hard And Then You Die CD (1986)
Alpine Static music CDs
$18.59 It's Immaterial has qualities that can't be discerned from one listen, at least on the band's debut LP, Life's Hard and Then You Die. Patience is really needed to let this record's oddball hooks kick in. The opening track, "Driving Away From Home (Jim's Tune)," is its most accessible. "Driving Away From Home" is a moody travelogue wherein John Campbell's half-spoken, half-sung vocals and Jarvis Whitehead's locomotive beat capture both the weariness and sense of wonder of being on a long road trip. Musically, the LP is all over the place -- new wave, country, blues, folk, and synth pop. Somehow the smorgasbord of styles works, because the bandmembers aren't being eclectic just for the sake of it; they simply have a wide canvas, keeping the album fresh from beginning to end. When Campbell talks, it isn't because he can't ...
