Brought Back to Life offers more psychobilly madness from Denmark's Nekromantix. The thrumming pulse of ringleader Kim Nekroman's coffin-shaped bass sits at the center of these songs, surrounded by approximations of rockabilly by guitarist Ian Dawn and drummer Grim Tim. It's approximations because Nekromantix are more interested in establishing an overall feel than nodding to traditionalism. Like the Misfits, who were more concerned with their showmanship and spooky overtones than adhering to any punk rock code, Nekromantix are happily enveloped in a world of zombies and evil things who prey in the night. If they go on a date, it's only to the monster movies. In fact love in Nekromantix world is kind of creepy, as "Nekrofelia" proves. An off-kilter version of the 1950s teen drama song (think "Last Kiss" by J. Frank Wilson), it deals with letters from beyond the grave and streaking graveyards out of love. None of this will be new to any Nekromantix or psychobilly fan. But the trio gets points for sticking so faithfully to a rather limited sound. ~ Johnny Loftus
Brought Back to Life Again is a reissue of Nekromantix's 1992 album Brought Back to Life, this time around appearing through Hellcat/Epitaph. Straightforward psychobilly is the name of the game here. The thrumming pulse of ringleader Kim Nekroman's coffin-shaped bass sits at the center of these songs, surrounded by approximations of rockabilly by guitarist Ian Dawn and drummer Grim Tim. None of this will be new to any Nekromantix or psychobilly fan. But Brought Back to Life Again's intro piece will be -- originally mangled, it was salvaged from the master tapes -- and there's also an alternate version of "Nekrofelia" that adds swirling organ and solemn church bells. ~ Johnny Loftus
Nekromantix: Kim Nekroman (vocals, bass instrument); Ian Dawn (guitar, background vocals); Grim Tim Handsome (drums).

Brought Back To Life Again album
$10.19 In the late '70s and early '80s, it wasn't uncommon to find punk bands that were enamored of '50s and early '60s rock & roll. The Clash covered the Bobby Fuller Four's "I Fought the Law," and the Ramones were well aware of the contributions of pioneers like Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley -- not to mention the girl groups, surf rockers and garage bands that emerged in the 1960s. Although Tiger Army wasn't formed until 1995, its work has recalled a time when punk bands showed their affection for early rock & roll. Released in 1999, this self-titled debut album is full of rockabilly influences -- the material is aggressive punk, but aggressive punk that owes a lot to rockabilly. ...

Brought Back To Life Again music CDs
$12.85 At this point, Gastr del Sol was pretty much just David Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke, though John McEntire was still around here and there on a couple of songs. There are a few other guests at points -- percussion from Steve Butters and clarinet from Gene Coleman, both on the lengthy, mysterious "Work From Smoke" -- but otherwise this was just the partnership going at it. Acoustic guitars were all the rage for the duo and that's what a listener will hear ...
