Once Sister Hazel's major-label debut, Somewhere More Familiar, became a hit on the heels of the success of the single "All for You," Universal reissued the group's original eponymous self-released album. Essentially, all of these songs are demos that the group used to get gigs, and eventually they started selling the album at gigs as well. None of the band's big hits are included ("All for You" is featured in an acoustic version), but concert staples like "Feel It" and "One Nation" are here, as well as nine other tracks. While the remaining cuts aren't quite of the same standard, they are pleasant, and dedicated fans will find the collection worthwhile. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Sister Hazel album
$12.59 Sister Hazel's major label debut is so catchy and polished, you'd think these guys had been around for years. This is earthy, folky pop with strong country and Southern rock influences, irresistible harmonies and hook-filled choruses. Sister Hazel's sound is familiar and contemporary, but there is an enthusiasm and optimism to their music, with lyrics like "And everything is wonderful/When everything's all right--so all right," from "Starfish." There's even a song called "Happy."
Even the less joyful songs, like "So Long," are refreshingly simple and angst-free. Musically, Sister Hazel recalls pop groups like Hootie and the Blowfish as well as harder-edged, slide-guitar-driven Southern rock bands (lead guitarist Ryan Newell cites the Allman Brothers and the Freddy Jones Band as influences, among others). SOMEWHERE MORE FAMILIAR rings sweet and true in a world full of bitterness and cynicism.

| | Sister Hazel Fortress CD (2000) Enhanced CD
Sister Hazel CD music
$12.59 Principally recorded at Rumbo Recorders, Canoga Park, California and Nickel And Dime Studios, Avondale Estates, Georgia in 1999 & 2000.
The Florida-based band, whose name was inspired by a rescue mission minister, returns with FORTRESS, new music featuring uplifting vocal harmonies and simple, catchy modern rock with an eye to the future and an ear to the heart of classic rock values. Many of these tracks scream for radio play.
"Backporch" features tasty slide guitar, while "Change Your Mind" is the obvious single. "Surreal" evokes '70s-era Rod Stewart, while "Shame on Me" rocks just a little bit harder, recalling Counting Crows and Blues Traveler. "Your Winter" combines raw vocals with sweet, interwoven guitar and accordion melodies. "Strange Cup of Tea" showcases dirty electric blues, while "Elvis" documents a declining romance where the song's hero is happy walking away with nothing more than a "big painted velvet" portrait of Mr. Presley. A bittersweet title track closes FORTRESS with a nod to the Beatles on the fade.
Sister Hazel: Ken Block (vocals, acoustic guitar); Andrew Copeland (vocals, electric & baritone guitars); Ryan Newell (acoustic, electric, slide & classical guitars, mandolin, background vocals); Jeff Beres (Fender Rhodes piano, melodica, bass, background vocals); Mark Trojanowski (drums, loops).
Producers: Paul Ebersold, Ritchie Zito, Ralph Sall, Don McCollister, Mike Clink.
Engineers include: Mike Clink, Ross Hogarth, Noel Golden.
Additional personnel: Endre Granat, Sheldon Sanon (violin); Simon Oswell (viola); David Low (cello); Kim Bullard (strings, Mellotron, loops); Mike Finnigan, Jason Fuller (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Johnathon Gilutan (piano); Paul Ebersold, Don McCollister (Hammond B-3 organ); Jaime Muhoberac (organ, Mellotron); Jeff Savage (keyboards, loops); Count Umbutu (tambourine); Denny Fongheiser (percussion, loops); Luiz Conte (percussion); Emily Sailers (background vocals).

Cognizant of the fact that adult contemporary folk-rock wasn't getting a fair shake on the major-label level, Sister Hazel opted out of its deal in order to self-release CHASING DAYLIGHT, the band's first studio effort since 2000's FORTRESS. Clinging to a straightforward rock sound that draws from the same well of inspiration as Hootie & The Blowfish and Counting Crows, this Floridian quintet has continued writing songs steeped in the intricacies of love and relationships. Frontman Ken Block has a particular knack for ruminating over heartbreak, loss, and devotion via the self-penned soaring desperation of "Your Mistake" and anthemic "Sword and Shield."
These Gainesville rockers also hooked up with a number of famous songwriting collaborators including '80s pop star Richard Marx (the chugging "Life Got In The Way") and former Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers drummer Stan Lynch (an ethereal "Hopeless"). Other highlights include the soulful "Killing Me Too," jaunty "Swan Dive," and gorgeous, harmony-soaked "Can't Believe." Although there's nothing quite ground-breaking about CHASING DAYLIGHT, these dozen cuts are still a solid rock & roll effort that will undoubtedly appeal to those tired of pre-fabricated pop and puerile posturing.
The band opted to move more from the major label mainstream back to their grass-roots fan base with this indie release. Chasing Daylight shows Sister Hazel's growth with everything ...

| | Sister Hazel Lift CD (2004)
Sister Hazel album
$13.89 After years without major-label support or a radio hit, Sister Hazel still had healthy album sales and a busy touring schedule in 2004. It's a good thing that the group decided to stick it out, because LIFT is one of Sister Hazel's most accomplished efforts. A hard-working road-warrior band, the Gainsville, Florida-based combo easily moves between Zippo-waving post-grunge ("Surrender"), RUMOURS-era Fleetwood Mac-style folk rock ("Hold On"), blistering Lenny Kravitz-like guitar heroics ("I Will Come Through"), and even a bit of Little Feat-esque Southern funk ("All the Love"). Like the latter, Sister Hazel seems to be able to play just about any style in an equally convincing, soulful manner, and, on LIFT, the diversity of the group's talents is on ...
| | Sister Hazel Absolutely CD (2006) Bonus Tracks
Sister Hazel CD music
$13.05 On their sixth studio album, Gainesville, Florida's Sister Hazel sticks close to the upbeat, strummy pop-rock formula that made them popular on campuses and AAA radio stations throughout the mid-1990s and forward. And though their music is as comfortable and familiar as a flannel shirt and worn-out jeans, they are capable of delivering powerful rockers like the single "Mandolin Moon," featuring sparkling vocal harmonies on the chorus; the aching power-ballad "One ...

| | Throw Rag 13 FT. And Rising CD (2005) Digipak
Sister Hazel songs
$11.65 Hailing from the forsaken desert wilderness of California's Salton Sea, Throw Rag does something that surprisingly few other punk bands do these days: they sound an awful lot like the Dead Kennedys, circa 1980. Where most purveyors of non-metal heavy music these days refer to themselves as "post-hardcore," these guys are very definitely pre-hardcore. Listen to "Lil' Danny" and ask yourself how much it reminds you of "Police Truck," and check out the twisted cowpunk saga "So. 5th St. (Country in O.G.)" and picture the Pogues if Shane MacGowan had grown up in the Imperial Valley. It fits, doesn't it? The funny thing is that Throw Rag started out as an insane acoustic psychobilly outfit, and have gradually (over the course of eight years) turned into the sort of weirdo pre-hardcore monstrosity capable of attracting -- on its first album, mind you -- guest appearances from the likes of Jello Biafra (whose antiestablishment hysteria is starting to sound a bit tired, if you want to know the truth), former Black Flag/Circle Jerks frontman Keith Morris, and the still-godlike Lemmy Kilmister. Unfortunately, not even Lemmy can save the band's ill-considered misappropriation of homeboy Merle Haggard's "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down," but the originals are all good, whacked-out fun. Recommended to anyone who doesn't care about the state of his or her immortal soul. ~ Rick Anderson

Sister Hazel album
$10.45 Balkan Beat Box's self-titled debut, released in 2005, announced the band's zany fusion of traditional Jewish, Eastern European, and Middle Eastern folk forms with electronic beats influenced by hip-hop and club music. Like contemporaries Gogol Bordello and Kultur Shock, Balkan Beat Box brings old world music boogieing into the 21st century with hard grooves and speaker-shaking energy. The Bulgarian female chorus and brass band that drive "Bulgarian Chicks" is a fine example of Balkan Beat Box's charms, as is the understated snake-charmer groove of "Adir Adirim" and the klezmer-flavored "Gross." As the global community gets more and more cozy, albums like ...
