Like the fruit after it was named, Grapefruit's debut album was at times too sweet, but was on the whole a promising and worthy effort. Devoted almost wholly to songs written by leader George Alexander, the record featured tuneful, upbeat mid-tempo late-'60s British rock with good harmonies, creative ornate arrangements, and a very slight and very sunny psychedelic tinge. Certainly similarities to the Paul McCartney-penned tracks from the Beatles' own psych-pop era are evident, and if George Alexander's songs weren't in nearly the same league as McCartney's, well, no one working the style was in McCartney's league. Grapefruit was at their best on the occasional songs in which they reached into slightly darker and more melancholy territory, particularly when they made creative use of strings, organ, baroque keyboards, and Mellotron, as on "This Little Man" and "Dear Delilah" and the instrumental "Theme for Twiggy." The latter tune sounds like something that could have been killer had words been devised; as it is, it seems like something that wasn't quite seen through to completion. There's also the Four Seasons cover "C'mon Marianne," which, although it wasn't one of their better tracks, was (along with "Dear Delilah") one of their two small U.K. hits. The CD reissue on Repertoire adds "Dead Boot," the non-LP B-side of "Dear Delilah." ~ Richie Unterberger

$10.99 This edition of REBIRTH includes material released by 2 predecessor bands, The Stoics and The Mind's Eye. Also includes bonus tracks originally released as 45's.
The first half of Rebirth is a rather phenomenal document: mood-driven and densely textured psychedelia at its very best. "Daybreak" opens the album with what seems to be a fairly quaint ditty until its controlled eruptions of orchestration, unique and enticing, cause the music to grow in dimension. "Maypole" also initially leans toward ...

| | Joe T Choi Son CD (2006)
Around Grapefruit songs
$10.15 In a land where children "worship" albums were getting auto-tuned and grown professionals were brought into the project to also get their vocals auto-tuned to sound like a chipmunk child, Joe was pretty much fed up with going the route of fancy pants with music and trying to be cool and slick. There's nothing wrong with being cool and slick but it just rubbed Joe the wrong way when it came to things like "worship" and especially "children's worship" where the beauty of both of these were the innocence, the absence of pretentiousness, and the honesty behind the expression(s). Thus came the idea for "Son." Joe was generously offered to record with the "best musicians" and with the "best gear" all with good intent, however, Joe did not want "the best", he wanted "the real" and the actual people he played with and were in his life. He wanted soul and wanted to capture child-likeness. Joe brought in friends to record on this album that he ate with, hung out with, and strangely, didn't play much music with. They played together sometimes at Church and at other random events, however, they never considered themselves to be bandmates. It made sense though to Joe that this was it. The engineer on the project asked Joe before the recording began, "So Joe, you're telling me that you pretty much want this album to sound like garbage?" Joe, like mentioned earlier, told the engineer, "I want no plug-ins, no auto-tune, no anything to polish this thing up to make it sound like something different than what it is." With that being said, it is with no surprise that Crazy Emu (aka Andrew Shim) had a very difficult time with Joe and the project altogether. The alias "Crazy Emu" actually was created spontaneously to prevent his name being attached to this project. Andrew, however, was Joe's cousin so they had a lot of good and painful fun duking this out together in the studio. The recording pretty much looked like this: Andrew (engineer aka Emu), Stewart (drums), Leo (bass), and Joe (vocals and guitar) woke up in the wee hours of the morning and drove up to Redding from Weaverville(about a 45-minute drive). They ...
