This two-fer CD collects the entirety of two albums by post-bop guitarist Jim Hall, 1956's BLUES ON THE ROCKS and 1960's GOOD FRIDAY BLUES.
This CD features Jim Hall's complete trio recordings with bassist George Duvivier and drummer Chico Hamilton as heard on the album Blues On The rock recorded in Los Angeles on February 8, 1956. This release also includes the complete album Good Friday Blues recorded in Los Angeles on April 1 & 2, 1960 with pianist Red Mitchell and bassist Red Kelly. Gambi. 2005.

Assisted by the trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, the post-bop guitarist Jimmy Raney is heard here in a 1956 session performing a varied set that displays his lyrical, often cerebral playing to its best advantage, including the standards "How Long Has This Been Going On?" and "Isn't It Romantic."
Though Jimmy Raney recorded under his own name as early as 1953, it's this 1956 set that is regarded as his arrival as a leader. Raney is as fine an arranger as he is a guitarist. These eight tracks with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone -- another fine arranger in a soloist's role -- shine with the ease and fluidity of the best of the cool sessions recorded at the dawn of hard bop. One of the finest examples of the interplay between Raney and Brookmeyer occurs at the beginning of the album's second track, "How Long Has This Been Goin' On," where the pair engage in a brief contrapuntal dialogue before Brookmeyer solos on the melody and Raney fills the space behind him gently by whispering his chords and fills through the trombonist's phrasing before taking his own solo and slipping an inverted harmonic ...

The second of these albums, Great Jazz Standards, featured a similar band with some notable differences. For one, the inclusion of soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy as a soloist and rhythm sections that included either Dennis Charles or Elvin Jones on drums, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Budd Johnson on tenor for about half the set. The finer moments here include "Ballad of the Sad Young Men," (a newish tune at the time with a fine piano solo by Evans) John Lewis' "Django," with a truly brilliant and understated solo by Lacy, who also does a commendable job on "Straight No Chaser." Johnson wails on Gil Evans' "La Nevada (Theme)." Evans arrangement of Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring" is also a killer, with his and guitarist Ray Crawford's solos. The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings is a fine collection issued by Blue Note, which, as part of the Connoisseur Series, is limited and will be out of print again soon. Don't wait. ~ Thom Jurek

Those expecting a simple solo drummer showcase from the man who led both Yes and King Crimson into the deepest of topographic oceans should, upon listening to Bruford's independent exploits, be pleasantly surprised. ONE OF A KIND, album number two for the Bruford band, sows Bruford's wild jazz roots for once and all, peppered judiciously with numerous elements of his freewheeling prog rock past.
To accompany his nimble rhythmic travails, he assembled a crackerjack squad of supporting players. Together this quartet recorded the symphonic prog of "The Sahara of Snow," the electronic shabazz of "Hell's Bells," and the undeniably gorgeous fusion-bop of "The Abingdon Chasp." Rarely has an album title been so accurate.
Bill Bruford ended his brief affair with U.K. and condensed his original outfit to a quartet, releasing a second album of sinewy, celebratory jazz/rock fusion, One of a Kind. Good-humored twists and turns abound in the music, punctuated by Bruford's steadying if slightly subversive rhythms, Allan Holdsworth's flashes of fire, Jeff Berlin's insistent bass, and Dave Stewart's remarkably colorful keyboards. At the heart of many of these songs is an uplifting melody, a trait shared with fusion artists like Weather Report and Jean-Luc Ponty, though Bruford's outfit favors a faster pace than the former and pursues more musical avenues in a single song than the latter.
