Boasting the fermented wit of producer/multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Jason Hill and the sneering vocals of Brian Karscig, this California outfit excels at dirty, punky glam, served with no chaser. "Louis XIV" and "Finding Out True Love Is Blind" pay homage to everyone that ever sweated until their makeup ran down their face, then fell off the stage in 12-inch platform boots (Marc Bolan & T. Rex, David Bowie, Mott the Hoople, et al). Most of Louis XIV's saucy debut EP, ILLEGAL TENDER, gets sewn into this long-player's silver-lame-stretched girth, as do some low-key numbers like "Ball of Twine" and "All the Little Pieces." Without a doubt, this is unfettered rock & roll perversion at its most entertaining--profane, energetic, and self-aware. THE BEST LITTLE SECRETS ARE KEPT would have been the best party record of the mid-'70s, but it showed up up three decades late, dressed to the nines, with an album cover so blatantly sexually that it's almost quaint.

After the British dance-pop act Bananarama hit paydirt in the 1980s with a string of infectious chart hits, it seemed inevitable that they would fade into the background of pop history. That the group was still releasing records 20 years after their commercial peak is impressive enough, but even more impressive is that 2006's DRAMA has much of the same playful, exuberant punch of their early work. Though updated to keep pace with contemporary sounds, Bananarama's music still pulses with a Eurovision vibe designed for maximum dancefloor accessibility. The album also contains two new remixes of the band's hits "Venus" and "Really Saying Something."
Bananarama have had a hard road to travel since their classic years in the Stock, Aitken & Waterman camp when they were sure-thing hitmakers. Trends in pop music evolved and popular tastes shifted in other directions and the 'Rama, along with other artists, were left in the dust needing to regroup. Fast-forward through the alt rock '90s and Bananarama decided to make a comeback with Drama, eleven songs with a Europop edge designed for dancefloors and die-hard fans waiting for a potent comeback from their favorite trio (by then a duo). In some places this formula works well; in other instances it falls woefully flat. But the most painful moments come at the end, where the duo thought it would be a good idea to re-record two of their most well-known hits, "Venus" and "Really Saying Something," and have them remixed by Soft Cell's Marc Almond and Solasso, respectively. These dance mixes do not work well at all and should be avoided at all costs. So while Drama has moments of promise, ultimately it falls flat and Bananarama remain a shadow of their formerly infectious selves. Definitely for die-hard loyalists only. The second disc in the series of classic Bollywood songs covered by the Bombay Connection label steps back a bit in time from the first disc, focusing instead on, to quote the sleeve, "bouncin' nightclub grooves from Bollywood films, 1959-1972." As an illuminating liner note essay from Naresh Fernandes explains, many films during that era featured a nightclub sequence either as backdrop or as a central location, often to showcase a new and often (to conservative values) threatening moral modernity. As a bit of having one's cake and eating it too, it was a clever move, but even smarter was getting some great music, and once more the series compilers have struck gold with a slew of fantastic songs. The most famous song to American audiences would be "Jan Pahechan Ho," originally from the 1965 film Gumnaam but featured in a brief but notable clip in the film Ghost World many years later. In full it's a brilliant, dramatic number, with guitar, horns and drums almost as all over the place as an Esquivel arrangement, while singer Mohammed Rafi sings with verve and confidence.
