Proto-ska band Madness record a collection of covers on DANGERMEN SESSIONS.
Ten years after their 1994 reformation, '80s British pop-reggae heroes Madness adopted the Dangermen moniker to enable a return to their roots performing reggae and ska in sweaty London pubs. In placing their own inimitable stamp both on reggae classics like Max Romeo's "Chase the Devil" and pop covers like Jose Feliciano's "Rain," THE DANGERMEN SESSIONS captures the band sounding just as fresh and energized as when they first erupted onto the London scene in 1979. Their irresistibly danceable take on the Kinks' "Lola" recalls a rootsier UB40, while over the churning rhythm of "Israelites" vocalist Suggs provides the best approximation of Desmond Dekker's patois-laced lyrics to date.
What does a veteran band do when it's some 25 years into its career and wants to record a new album but doesn't have any new original songs? Why, record a covers album of course! And that's exactly what Madness, the kings of British ska revival, have done for their ninth studio album, 2005's The Dangermen Sessions, Vol. 1. It's their first new album since 1999's Wonderful, but they've been active in the interim, playing gigs on a regular basis. This means that the group sounds supple and professional, even if the lack of new songs in six years does suggest that the band doesn't really have anything to say at this point, and would just rather play, relax, and have a good time while encouraging others to have a good time. And that's fine -- The Dangermen Sessions, Vol. 1 is pleasantly laid-back, a good soundtrack to a lazy summer afternoon. Madness demonstrate a stronger reggae bent than they ever have, which does mean that album can be reminiscent of UB40's similar venture, Labour of Love, but Dangermen never sounds too sleepy or refined, as UB40's sequels to their 1983 commercial breakthrough did. In other words, it still has that nutty Madness sound, only it's not nearly as frenetic as it was 25 years ago -- it's mellow and relaxed, and rather charming because of it. That doesn't mean that The Dangermen Sessions, Vol. 1 is something that even hardcore fans will play all that often, but anybody who has liked Madness in the past will find it hard not to enjoy this CD as it plays. [A Japanese version added a bonus track.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Japanese pressing of their 2005 album features a bonus track, a cover of Horace Andy's 'Skylarking'. 14 tracks in all. V2. 2005.Entertainment Weekly (No. 834, p.143) - "...SESSIONS is a dandy little party record for your next Saturday-night soiree." - Grade: B Uncut (p.90) - 3 stars out of 5 - "As an outfit sprung with a sense of fun, wiry intelligence and daring, Madness remain a one-off..." Dangermen Sessions songs
$16.45 Nu-Soul Magazine - Robert Gee releases his debut album entitled All My Love with a sophistication and maturity that is pleasing to the ear. With his ability to create music that gives us insight on love and relationships, Robert conveys messages that we can't always express. Overall, the album is a good listen. On those quiet nights of bliss and clear skies, Robert will take you on a journey of love, life, and all things in between.Soul Sides - FINALLY,those of you who don't mind a little touch of R&B with their soul might get into All My Love from Philly vocalist and writer ROBERT GEE. The thing that sets it apart is that Rob can surely sing. Of course this means he doesn't necessarily follow whatever the latest R&B trend is - like who cares? Instead opting to sing the way he learned on a bunch of melodies that old fuddy duddy soul fans would probably lap up. A Bit Brian McKnight, then, but not so samey in the song department. Naturally, my own preference is for the moments he takes it over into our territory and his Hathaway-like tendencies rise to the top: a soft, glowing cover of "Round Midnight" for example. But there's every chance you'll enjoy this CD'S greater part. CHRIS WELLS-ECHOES MAG. (UK) Soultracks - The disc opens smartly with it's best track. With Pamela Williams' jazz sax as a backdrop, Gee confidently glides through this radio ready track. While "All My Love" is the albums most commercial cut, it is by no means the only memorable one. Perhaps the most enjoyable things about "All My Love"--and there are a lot of enjoyable moments on this disc, Robert Gee sounds absolutely fresh , issuing one of hte most consistently accessible albums of the year. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. BY:CHRIS RIZIKSoulsite. de (Germany) - With this album Robert Gee wants to transport the "True Soul" and arouse the deepest emotions. The album begins with "All My Love" in the finest R& B tradition. With a voice that lies down like a silk cloth with saxophone backgrounds. It has what we call that certain something...But it not just a Quiet storm trimmed album. Gee also has R&B and Hip Hop Tracks. The High quality production holds a beneficial distance from the average music. Tends to the extraordinary and spoils the senses. But Gees velvet voice and high precision drawing plays the main role. By: ERICK RITTIGSoulchoonz (UK) - This is more of an R&B set than previous albums i have reviewed of late. There is more intelligence to this gentleman then you'll find on the run of the mill sets spewed out by the majors and as such is far more accessible than most that are around at the moment. But if you like artist like Cognac and Kino Watson then you should also like Robert Gee. Tracks like "When You Get Down To It" and "Here We Go" remind me of Brian McKnights "Ten" release. But "Come Home" does nothing but elevate Robert from his legion of contemporaries. This is recommended release from an artist with a glowing future. By: BARRY TOWLER True 'soul' music evokes emotions and speaks straight to the heart of the listener. ...
