Live at the House of Tribes documents trumpeter Wynton Marsalis performing with his sextet at the intimate community theater space in New York City on December 15, 2002. Apparently an annual ritual of sorts for Marsalis, the performance makes for one of his best live recordings since 1986's stellar Live at Blues Alley. Backed by a slightly altered lineup from his 2005 Blue Note studio debut, The Magic Hour, Marsalis gains first-class support from alto saxophonist Wessel Anderson, pianist Eric Lewis, drummer Joe Farnsworth, bassist Kengo Nakamura, and percussionist Orlando Q. Rodriguez. Special mention must be made of Robert Rucker for his highly energetic tambourine performance on the New Orleans "2nd Line" finale. New Orleans jazz aficionados may recognize this tune as "Joe Avery's Blues" and based on the cheering, clapping, and general rowdiness of the crowd, it probably found the band marching around the room. In fact, one of the great things about the album is that you can really hear the crowd. There are many moments of the band playing a particularly nice phrase or line and somebody grunting out a surprised and pleased "hmmm." Marsalis seems to really feed off this interplay and his playing, never less than technically superb, sounds inspired. To these ends, Marsalis takes swinging blues and angular post-bop harmonicism to ever-increasing absurdist heights on "Green Chimneys." Similarly, he brings a mix of Clifford Brown and Clark Terry to "Donna Lee" and waxes romantic with devastating melodicism on "You Don't Know What Love Is." Loose, swinging, funky, and spirited, Live at the House of Tribes is an absolute joy. ~ Matt Collar
This live set finds jazz ambassador Wynton Marsalis doing what he does best--that is, playing straightforward, bop-inflected jazz with flawless technique. Marsalis pays homage to the masters with versions of Thelonious Monk's "Green Chimneys" and Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," and offers a lilting, smoky reading of the standard "You Don't Know What Love Is."
There is plenty of stretching out over these six tracks, with superb solos from both Marsalis and alto saxophonist Wessell Anderson, while the tight rhythm section keeps things churning and energized. A tasty, contemporary update of bop and post-bop, LIVE AT THE HOUSE OF TRIBES keeps the classic jazz flame burning brightly.

5 stars The Wynton We Been Waiting For
This is the Wynton we been waiting for this is his best CD of the new millennium while I love his own original works it is great to hear him playing these incredible standards with a band that is red-hot. His trumpet playing has never sounded better and Eric Lewis on piano sounds like a young Art Tatum. Wessel Anderson on alto saxophone plays with raw abandon, this album is produced by Delfeayo Marsalis he is the hottest producer in jazz right now. If you have never been a Wynton fan before this is the time to give him another try, this is jazz the way it was meant to be played. One of the top 10 of the year.

3 stars Shades Of Woody Shaw @Lee Morgan
This is the Baddest post50s hardbop that I have heard in a long time.Mr Wyton use New Oreleans& New York cut cards he has been holdin up his Trumpet Sleeve. The elongated solos and the cerebal blistering speed would make Woody and papa Lee Morgan proud.

5 stars Hands Down the Best
This a new standard to any Jazz lovers collection, Wynton's interpritation of these classic's is nothing short of incredible. With every song (just about) featuring a solo from everyone in the band it shows that Wynton HIMSELF isn't just great but that the people he plays with are great also. Wynton's choices of pieces are reasonable for he is a huge supporter of the classic style and you can't deny that thats what he's playing though he does throw in a few twists along the way. Wynton Marsalis is one of the most influential Jazz player/composers of this Century and still he can amaze not having reached his full potential yet. He starts off with Monk's famous "Green Chimneys", this shows not only his technical skill but also his power and energy. Sliding from the Thelonious Monk Piece he enters with the slow starting "Just Friends" featuring a supurb bass solo from bassist Kengo Nakamura. He changed the mood of the room with a bone chilling rendition of "You Don't Know What Love Is". Lighting up the room with his fast flowing smooth flury of notes from the Charlie Park song "Donna Lee". Calming the room back down with "What Is This Thing Called Love" Marsalis gives without a doubt the best proformance of the night. Finally closeing out with a Piece Entitled "2nd Line" he sends everyone home with a smile hearing his entergetic exit from the show. I hope to see more of his work looking more like this.
