Blue Desert Highway album
$11.65 After more than a decade of recording for other labels, George Thorogood & the Destroyers moved back to EMI/Capitol for the release of 2009's THE DIRTY DOZEN. Split into two sides and consisting of covers of classic blues songs, some bar band favorites, and a couple of lesser-known tracks, the album digs back into the archives to uncover some buried tracks from the '80s and '90s. What's uncanny is that apart from the tinny sound of the recordings from the late '80s/early '90s, the band and Thorogood sound exactly the same almost two decades later. George still has the same ferocious slide technique, his growling vocals have barely aged, and the band still has the feel of skilled musicians who know how to play it simple. In other words, GT & the Destroyers still rock, and if you were ever a fan, you still should be. The ...
| | Etta James: At Last ! CD (1961) Remastered
Blue Desert Highway CD music
$8.09 Originally released on Argo (4003). Includes liner notes by Andy McKaie.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
When Etta James signed with Chess Records in 1960, the label decided to pair her raw, bluesy singing with a full backing band and lush orchestrations. AT LAST!, her Chess debut, shows the formula working to fine effect, as it highlights the singer's facility with different approaches including torchy ...

| | Essential Blues Brothers CD (2003)
Blue Desert Highway songs
$8.89 This 2003 release compiles tracks from the Blues Brothers' two live albums and The Blues Brothers soundtrack. Of the 12 songs, five come from 1978's Briefcase Full of Blues, five from 1980's Made in America, and two from 1980's soundtrack. The songs from Briefcase Full of Blues are the highlights; tracks like "Messin' With the Kid," "Rubber Biscuit," and the huge hit "Soul Man" are loose, full of fun, and alive with soul -- they capture a cultural moment and will have you dancing around the room. The two tracks from the soundtrack, "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love," are less successful; Joliet Jake and Elwood need a raw, live setting to shine -- coop them up in a studio and their flaws (mainly weak vocals) are very obvious. By the time Made in America was released, the Blues Brothers' schtick was wearing a bit thin (Elwood sounds especially dorky on his molasses-slow rendition of the Robins/Coasters' "Riot in Cell Block #9"), the music was sounding a bit tired and overly professional, and the covers less obscure. There is enough energy in the presentation to make the music fun, but it doesn't have the same punch that the first record did. An ...
| | E G Kight Takin' It Easy CD (2004)
Blue Desert Highway album
$13.79 Anyone who can cover Duke Ellington and the Allman Brothers on the same disc and make both fit seamlessly into the whole has something going for them. And former country singer E.G. Kight certainly does it all right on Takin' It Easy. By using a mostly acoustic setting for her songs -- both original and covers -- she puts the emphasis exactly where it should be -- quite squarely on her vocals. As she's often proved since turning to the blues in 1995, she has a remarkably soulful lilt to her voice, and it shines very well on "Wish You ...
