Hauschka's The Prepared Piano is the distillation of Erik Satie's stripped-down languor, John Cage's innovations, and Klimperei's toy pop. Or in other words: the prepared piano technique applied to simple tunes that have a childlike quality to them. Cage had desecrated and reinvented the bourgeois instrument par excellence in the 1940s, taping, screwing, and placing almost every small object possible on its strings to conjure up new sounds. Since then, the prepared piano has mostly remained a tool of the avant-garde. Few artists have tried to use it outside that niche. Homemade instrument aficionados like Frank Pahl, Pascal Comelade, and the French duo Klimperei have occasionally turned to it, but generally preferred to "prepare" guitars and toy instruments. Hauschka, aka Volker Bertelmann, conceived a series of short tunes that sound like delicate piano melodies backed by a gamelan orchestra with small toys added to its ranks, except it's all solo piano (plus a touch of bass and electronic drums in "Morning"). The writing is graceful, accessible, maybe a tad too repetitive. The preparations never sound like a disposable add-on; Bertelmann uses specific regions of the keyboard to create rhythm, introduce a metallic overtone, or simply create a larger-than-life persona for his piano. The result is a charming feel-good album, slightly inconsequential despite its cleverness, but enjoyable and fresh-sounding. ~ François Couture

Prepared Piano album
$6.49 Following the platinum success of SLOWHAND, BACKLESS continued Eric Clapton's transformation into a singer/songwriter with better-than-average chops after a lifetime of guitar godhood. Eschewing the star-studded cameos of NO REASON TO CRY, Clapton instead relied on his core group of the '70s: George Terry, Carl Radle, Jamie Oldaker, Dick Simms and Marcy Levy. Levy in particular, proved her worth by co-writing the slide-drenched "Roll It" with Slowhand. Her passionate testifying on this as well as her sparkling harmonies on the Don Williams-influenced "Promises" made up for fellow back-up singer Yvonne Elliman's departure following SLOWHAND's release.
Clapton's choice of composers to cover included Dylan ("Walk Out In The Rain," "If I Don't Be There By Morning"), J.J. Cale ("I'll Make Love To You Anytime") and Okie Danny Flowers ("Tulsa Time"). In addition, Slowhand added a nearly eight-minute interpretation of the blues standard ...

| | Edge: David Axelrod At Capitol Records 1966-1971 CD (2005)
Prepared Piano songs
$11.89 EMI in Great Britain reissued David Axelrod's three albums for Capitol in fine editions on both vinyl and CD at the end of the 1990s. Fantasy issued its own retrospective, The Axelrod Chronicles, in 2000. Blue Note is finally getting its act together here by taking a look at the work Axelrod did as both a producer and artist with Capitol from 1966-1970. The Edge is not perfect, but for 17 tracks it does give a halfway decent look at the wide range of projects and artists Axe worked with, despite the album's aesthetic inconsistency. Some of the most compelling of these are the tracks with actor David McCallum on vocals -- who played Robert Vaughn's sidekick Ilya Kuryakin in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. -- Axelrod produced four albums for him. "House of Mirrors," is a way tripped-out psychedelic piece with vocals Echoplexed to the max. The title cut is an instrumental that is all dreamy shimmering flute, vibes, guitars, and a horn section for drama. There is also a cut here from the South African artist Letta Mbulu, complete with a thunderstorm as an intro. Spacey, drifty, it's utterly beautiful with spare percussion and Mbulu's haunting voice sensing in her native tongue. Or course Lou Rawls is represented here with a monologue and his burning rendition of "You've Made Me So Very Happy." Axelrod himself has the lion's share of the ...
| | Benoit Pioulard Precis CD (2006)
Prepared Piano album
$11.89 Superficial as it can be to judge an album by its artwork, the shimmer and shadow on the cover of Benoît Pioulard's first full-length (and Kranky debut), Précis, aptly depicts the music inside. Like the Enge EP, this is an album full of gorgeous dream pop crossed with laptop electronics (and sometimes, vice versa) that showcases Pioulard's sweet, somewhat drowsy vocals and versatile acoustic guitar playing. However, Précis goes far beyond the EP's scope, embellishing his music with sparkling yet subtle layers of percussion and sound effects that give these songs a dreamy depth. Roughly half of the album consists of delicately crafted songs that are accessible, but never predictable. Précis' melodies are just as creative, and even more memorable, than the textures around them: "Ext. Leslie Park" glides along on a beautifully melancholy, descending melody that's twinned in Pioulard's vocals and guitar, while the fantastic album closer, "Ash into the Sky," is lilting, seemingly effortless, and appropriately weightless. And, while "Triggering Back," "Sous la Plage," and "Together & Down" are all tightly structured songs, they never feel constrained; while they're undeniably catchy, they still have ...
| | Prefuse 73 92 vs. 02 Collection CD (2002)
Prepared Piano CD music
$7.29 Prefuse 73 aka Scott Herren is one of Warp's biggest artists with his debut from 2001 selling steady. This release shows a more self-assured creator expanding his palette and honing his craft. This is creative hip hop for the intelligent and curious.
At first listen, the 92 Vs. 02 EP sounds like Prefuse 73 has gone out to pasture and returned with something altogether new -- and was so excited he found it that he had to show everyone by tossing out this 15-minute recording. Leaving behind a bulk of the frantic, chopped-up samples and frenetic beats that adorned the groundbreaking 2001 full-length, Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives, Scott Herren (aka Prefuse 73) goes for a calmer and more collected approach to instrumental hip-hop. The cut-ups are still present, but the samples are warmer and allowed to set forth texture for a stretch further than the full-length -- which is a good thing because no matter how fresh Vocal Studies sounded, it was probably more of a departure point for Herren, and now that he's had the chance to soak it in he has also found some inspiration in an unlikely place. While on a tour stop in Detroit for Vocal Studies, ...

Ellen Allien herself makes several appearances, as do relatively well-known acts the MFA and Smash TV (on the robot-disco rave-up "Disco 2 Break" and the enjoyably cheesy "TechTechTalk," ...
