Michael Caine, Peter Ustinov, Rex Harrison, William Holden, and Omar Sharif star. After his wife is kidnapped by modern-day slave traders, UN doctor David Linderby teams up with an American mercenary on a perilous quest to free her. As they track her across Africa and the Sahara, they're joined by an anti-slavery fighter and a tribesman seeking revenge on the head slave trader. ASHANTI is set against the background of the modern slave trade. The Linderbys are both doctors, but David (Michael Caine) is English and white, while Anansa (Beverly Johnson) is American and black--her ancestors were from the Ashanti kingdom in Ghana. Believing she is a native Ashanti, Anansa's abductors are surprised to discover that she speaks English and is a World Health Organization doctor. When Suleiman (Peter Ustinov) discovers who she is, he realizes that he is likely to make more money than usual--and end up in much more trouble.
Director Richard Fleischer's ASHANTI is essentially a revenge story, but, unlike the western THE BRAVADOS or the urban thriller DEATH WISH, the film is set in exotic location of desert Africa. The movie is distinguished by some beautiful Saharan vistas provided by Italian master photographer Aldo Tonti. Kabir Bedi gives an intense performance as Malik, the tribesman who lost his own wife and children to the slave trader. And the graceful Beverly Johnson gives a dignified authority to Anansa, the beautiful Ashanti. ASHANTI is breathtaking adventure of a man who resolutely takes on a treacherous journey in order to find his beautiful wife, who has been kidnapped by ruthless slave traders. David and Anansa Linderby (Michael Caine and Beverly Johnson) are doctors with the World Health Organization. On a medical mission, they visit a West African village. While David takes photographs of tribal dancers, Anansa goes swimming alone. She is attacked and abducted by slave traders led by Suleiman (Peter Ustinov). Enraged, David sets off after Anansa. As David tracks her across Africa and the Sahara desert, he is helped by a member of the Anti-Slavery League (Rex Harrison), a helicopter pilot (William Holden), and Malik (Kabir Bedi) a tribesman who is seeking revenge on Suleiman.
ASHANTI was released in 1979.
The film was shot on location in Kenya, Israel, and Sicily.
ASHANTI was the second film that master Italian photographer Aldo Tonti made with Richard Fleischer--their first very fruitful collaboration produced BARRABAS. In his long distinguished career, Tonti was also director of photography on Luchino Visconti's OSSESSIONE, King Vidor's WAR AND PEACE, Federico Fellini's NIGHTS OF CABIRIA and John Huston's RELECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE. ASHANTI was his last film.

$9.69 WWII. The "Blue Max", a coveted medal for achievement in flying, is ruthlessly sought by Peppard, a poor-boy German soldier who climbs out of the trenches and into the aristocratic air force. He is met with prejudice by the other contestants, wealthy snobs who look down upon his low economic stature. When he claims the title, he earns the respect of the General and the General's wife (Andress), who wants to repay him in ways that the General might not appreciate. Peppard, on the other hand, does. Fantastic aerial combat highlights the film, although the scenes between the two lovers don't hurt matters much.

$12.35 A political murder mystery set in Nazi-occupied Poland and postwar Paris, NIGHT OF THE GENERALS follows a military investigator, General Grau (Omar Sharif), on his inquiry into a prostitute's murder that has unexpectedly led him to three prime suspects (Peter O'Toole, Donald Pleasence, and Charles Gray)--all generals in the German army. Two years after the murder in Warsaw, Grau is transferred to Paris, where he confronts the man he believes to be the murderer--who is busy framing one of the other generals for the crime. When Paris detective Inspector Morand (Philippe Noiret) gets involved, more than one plot is uncovered in this tense drama that parallels World War II's mass murder with the individual actions of its participants. Director Anatole Litvak's film is based on the best-selling novel by Hans Helmut Kirst.

$13.59 James Brolin stars as Sheriff Wade Parent, a man who must stop a large, black 2-door sedan from terrorizing a small New Mexican town. No one knows the car's origin, who is driving it, or how to stop it. After it kills three people, the Sheriff must find a way to stop this seemingly indestructible machine. Who is behind the wheel? Could it be...Satan? That may be the case given that late Church of Satan leader Anton LaVey was given a 'Technical Advisor' credit on the film! Though it was greeted by a chorus of jeers when it surfaced in 1977, THE CAR is an oddly gripping and altogether unconventional horror film. From the director of A MAN CALLED HORSE and a script co-written by Michael Butler, writer of PALE RIDER.

$21.49 This adaptation of Sarah Waters popular novel follows Nan Astley (Rachael Stirling) as she blossoms into womanhood and explores her sexuality, ostensibly forbidden in Victorian society. Nan seems destined for marriage to a nice, but dull, suitor in her seaside, English town. However, a trip to the theater changes everything when she falls in love at first sight with the ravishing Kitty Butler (Keeley Hawes), a gorgeous woman who makes a living posing as a young boy and singing in a vaudeville-style cabaret--even to the extent of cutting her hair short. Though at first unable to identify her feelings, Nan simply cannot get enough of Kitty, and soon begins to spend every available second with her. As the two grow closer, Kitty invites Nan to accompany her to London. Against her family's wishes, the two move, and Nan eventually joins the show as another gender-bending performer. However, while Nan feels only blissful love for Kitty, Kitty cannot accept the fact of their relationship, and soon begins an affair with a man. Her relationship over, devastated Nan has no career and no love. Using the boyish costumes from her show, Nan begins to prostitute herself to men who are looking for teenage boys. | | Dominion: Prequel To The Exorcist DVD (2005) Widescreen; Subtitled
Ashanti film
$10.09 Hollywood is littered with stories of aborted attempts at moviemaking, with many directors finding themselves unceremoniously ousted from a project when a studio gets cold feet and rejects their work. Writer-director Paul Schrader (AUTO FOCUS) found himself in this position when he completed filming on a prequel to 1973's THE EXORCIST in 2004. With Renny Harlin replacing Schrader in the director's chair, then reshooting the movie in its entirety, it seemed Schrader's vision would be forever shelved alongside countless other terminated projects. However, 2005 saw a remarkable turn of events, as Warner Bros allowed Schrader's version of the film to be released under the name DOMINION: PREQUEL TO THE EXORCIST.
Like Harlin's film, Stellan Skarsgard plays a young Father Lankester Merrin. Traveling to East Africa, Merrin hopes to forget the horrific events of World War II, and repair his tattered beliefs, which have significantly lapsed following the gruesome battles he unfortunately witnessed. Once there, the dejected priest runs into a team of archaeologists, who are unearthing a buried church which appears to have been concealed under the African landscape for several centuries. As Merrin helps the team with their discoveries, some brutal and bloody events break out, leading to his first encounter with the powerful demon who would return to haunt him in the original EXORCIST movie. While the plot is essentially the same as Harlin's film, Schrader's movie eschews Grand Guignol-esque gore, choosing to build up a dark, creepy atmosphere instead. Fans looking for gross-out delights will find themselves better-served by Harlin's version of events, but for anyone looking for a subtle counterpoint to the brutal butchery and violent profanity of the other films in the series, look no further than DOMINION.
