The Linderbys are both doctors, but David (Michael Caine) is English and white, while Anansa (Beverly Johnson) is American and black--her ancestors were from the Ashanti kingdom in Ghana. Believing she is a native Ashanti, Anansa's abductors are surprised to discover that she speaks English and is a World Health Organization doctor. When Suleiman (Peter Ustinov) discovers who she is, he realizes that he is likely to make more money than usual--and end up in much more trouble.
Director Richard Fleischer's ASHANTI is essentially a revenge story, but, unlike the western THE BRAVADOS or the urban thriller DEATH WISH, the film is set in exotic location of desert Africa. The movie is distinguished by some beautiful Saharan vistas provided by Italian master photographer Aldo Tonti. Kabir Bedi gives an intense performance as Malik, the tribesman who lost his own wife and children to the slave trader. And the graceful Beverly Johnson gives a dignified authority to Anansa, the beautiful Ashanti. ASHANTI is breathtaking adventure of a man who resolutely takes on a treacherous journey in order to find his beautiful wife, who has been kidnapped by ruthless slave traders. David and Anansa Linderby (Michael Caine and Beverly Johnson) are doctors with the World Health Organization. On a medical mission, they visit a West African village. While David takes photographs of tribal dancers, Anansa goes swimming alone. She is attacked and abducted by slave traders led by Suleiman (Peter Ustinov). Enraged, David sets off after Anansa. As David tracks her across Africa and the Sahara desert, he is helped by a member of the Anti-Slavery League (Rex Harrison), a helicopter pilot (William Holden), and Malik (Kabir Bedi) a tribesman who is seeking revenge on Suleiman.
ASHANTI was released in 1979.
The film was shot on location in Kenya, Israel, and Sicily.
ASHANTI was the second film that master Italian photographer Aldo Tonti made with Richard Fleischer--their first very fruitful collaboration produced BARRABAS. In his long distinguished career, Tonti was also director of photography on Luchino Visconti's OSSESSIONE, King Vidor's WAR AND PEACE, Federico Fellini's NIGHTS OF CABIRIA and John Huston's RELECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE. ASHANTI was his last film.

WWII. The "Blue Max", a coveted medal for achievement in flying, is ruthlessly sought by Peppard, a poor-boy German soldier who climbs out of the trenches and into the aristocratic air force. He is met with prejudice by the other contestants, wealthy snobs who look down upon his low economic stature. When he claims the title, he earns the respect of the General and the General's wife (Andress), who wants to repay him in ways that the General might not appreciate. Peppard, on the other hand, does. Fantastic aerial combat highlights the film, although the scenes between the two lovers don't hurt matters much.

Hollywood is littered with stories of aborted attempts at moviemaking, with many directors finding themselves unceremoniously ousted from a project when a studio gets cold feet and rejects their work. Writer-director Paul Schrader (AUTO FOCUS) found himself in this position when he completed filming on a prequel to 1973's THE EXORCIST in 2004. With Renny Harlin replacing Schrader in the director's chair, then reshooting the movie in its entirety, it seemed Schrader's vision would be forever shelved alongside countless other terminated projects. However, 2005 saw a remarkable turn of events, as Warner Bros allowed Schrader's version of the film to be released under the name DOMINION: PREQUEL TO THE EXORCIST.
Like Harlin's film, Stellan Skarsgard plays a young Father Lankester Merrin. Traveling to East Africa, Merrin hopes to forget the horrific events of World War II, and repair his tattered beliefs, which have significantly lapsed following the gruesome battles he unfortunately witnessed. Once there, the dejected priest runs into a team of archaeologists, who are unearthing a buried church which appears to have been concealed under the African landscape for several centuries. As Merrin helps the team with their discoveries, some brutal and bloody events break out, leading to his first encounter with the powerful demon who would return to haunt him in the original EXORCIST movie. While the plot is essentially the same as Harlin's film, Schrader's movie eschews Grand Guignol-esque gore, choosing to build up a dark, creepy atmosphere instead. Fans looking for gross-out delights will find themselves better-served by Harlin's version of events, but for anyone looking for a subtle counterpoint to the brutal butchery and violent profanity of the other films in the series, look no further than DOMINION.
