A prequel to the war epic Zulu, this dramatic story recounts the breathtaking defeat of British forces at the hands of a 25,000-strong and relentlessly-determined Zulu army in 1870. The all-star cast and extravagant production quality amke this film a spectacular film with a guaranteed place in the list of Hollywood greats. Burt Lancaster, Peter O'Toole, Sir John Mills, and Bob Hoskins star. Dramatic and true story recounting the breathtaking defeat of British forces at the hands of a 25,000 strong and relentlessly determined Zulu Army. ZULU DAWN depicts the bloody Battle of Isandhlwana, in which 30,000 Zulu warriors wiped out nearly 1,500 British troops stationed in Natal. The film focuses most sharply on the preparations for battle and the political situation in the region at that time. Taking Zulu chief Cetshwayo's defiant stance on tribal customs as a declaration of war, General Lord Chelmsford sends in hundreds of British troops in order to squash the spear-carrying Africans with superior fire power. The sheer number of Zulus, however, overwhelms the British infantry. A Lamitas Presentation of a Samarkand Production.
Shot in Panavision. Color by Technicolor.
The film was released theatrically in USA at 98 minutes. It opened in New York City in July, 1982. -- Miha., Variety "...[A] sweeping battle film..."

Zulu Dawn Movie Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) Burt Hurt This was a great history lesson! This event happened soon after the battle at little/big horn! Ironically, the anglos got beat here too, by wit, wisdom and 'soul'.
The panoramic scenes and cinematography was astounding! Peter's horse riding was weak (was that historically
accurate or peter didn't train enough?). Burt's audio/voice was weak, we had to rewind and turn up the volume.
In fact alot of the dialogue and back-round noises were muddled - sound engineering had to be balanced better.
The greatness of the movie is the contrasts of the brits and zulus! The tea, cricket and british conservative protocol
versus the intense, swarming (that's a key word when you see this movie), determination of the zulus are great to take in
and prep with. What happens to a zulu shepherd boy and the brit 'marker' boy are great contrasts too!
A must see (if you're a history buff) [wasn't Winston Churchill part of this battle?] !

A story to long A good rendition of the lead up to the battle of Rourke's Drift but this film is to long winded before the action appears Submitted by doug4ann (Port of Spain Trinidad WI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 5 found this helpful.
This is a must see historical adventure The scene of thousands of Zulu warriors running for miles across the African landscape toward the inevitable battle is reason enough to buy this movie. My favorite scene is when the British enter Zulu territory and are met by a booming voice from the mountains...."Why do you come to the land of the Zulu?" This simple question is the beginning of the end for many brave British men. The young British soldiers are naively excited to be on a great adventure in Africa. They prove to be ill-prepared for the overwhelming force, tactics, and skill of the Zulu warriors. This defeat of the British is still studied and discussed by military tacticians and historians. If your someone who likes "underdog" movies where a native army wins a battle against superior firepower.....this isn't your kind of movie, because you'll never get the impression that the Zulu warriors were ever at a disadvantage in this battle. I can only imagine what the actual sight of this massive well trained army running full speed toward you or in a flanking maneuver must have looked like...it had to be terrifying. Great movie, you will watch it more than once. Submitted by Tony, King of Lithonia (Atlanta, Ga.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 6 found this helpful.

$7.05 William Friedkin unleashes his flare for tense action and gripping suspense in RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, an exciting military legal thriller that examines the moral gray area of combat experience and reflects on the ethos of the American military in the late 20th century. When the U.S. embassy in Yemen is stormed by anti-American protesters, Marine Colonel Terry Childers (an intense Samuel L. Jackson) rescues Ambassador Mourain (Ben Kingsley) from the explosive siege, and under fire from snipers within the crowd, he orders his men ...
