Youthful pride. Yearnings of the flesh. Moments of doubt. The courage of conviction. All enter into a dedicated American's decades-long rise from priesthood to the leadership elite of the College of Cardinals. Otto Preminger presents The Cardinal, winner of a Golden Globe® Best Picture Award and nominated for six 1963 Academy Awards®, including Best Director. Typical of Preminger's films, The Cardinal is packed with stars and issues. Tom Tryon, Carol Lynley, Ossie Davis, Burgess Meredith and Best Supporting Actor Oscar® nominee and Golden Globe® winner John Huston An Irish American priest whose strong commitment to social issues leads him through a labyrinth of church politics and eventually to the upper echelons of Catholic hierarchy as Cardinal. Crossing several continents, this epic traces his path and tests his faith along the way. Based on the novel by Henry Morton Robinson. Very Well Done Long but excellently done film about the career of a Cardinal in the United States and spanning quite a number of years. Picture quality is excellent, sound reasonable. The bonus disc with general information on Otto Preminger is a very good idea ! Submitted by nicholas.rhodes (Paris, France) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Covers all aspects of a priest's lifelong committment..
The quality of the dvd, and the sound were excellent---and, perhaps, most impressive of all was the prompt, accurate delivery eventhough the order was placed in December, the item wouldn't be available for releaseuntil February... I consistently received updates from CD Universe in the interim reminding me of the status of my order...
I had bought a VHS version of this several years ago, and was extremely disappointed in film and sound quality...Icouldn't be more pleased with the product AND your company!!
Sincerely,
Jim Brown Submitted by a reviewer (Denver, Colorado) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

| | Shane DVD (1953)
Cardinal review
$7.05 George Stevens' classic Western, adaptated from the Jack Schaefer novel, stars Alan Ladd in the title role. Riding the ranges of Wyoming's Grand Tetons, Shane stops at the farm of homesteader Joe Starrett (Van Heflin) just before Ryker (Emile Meyer), a powerful and predatory cattleman, arrives with his hired muscle to make the farmer a threatening offer for land that he intends to get by any means necessary. When Shane lets the cattle baron know that his gun will back Starrett if there's any trouble, the grateful homesteader offers the stranger a job as a hired hand, which he accepts. Joe's young son Joey (Brandon de Wilde) is drawn to the quiet stranger, whose difference from the men he knows is confirmed by the accidental revelation of a gunfighter's lightning reflexes. Shane becomes a valuable asset to the farm, but is slowly drawn into the continuing hostilities between the two opposing groups. To complicate matters, Shane feels an unspoken, and unwanted, attraction to Starrett's wife Marian (Jean Arthur). This creates a sense of ambivalence in Joe, whose son already idolizes the gunslinger. Stevens' meticulous artistry imbues the simple Western with the mythic aura of an Arthurian legend, as Loyal Griggs' beautifully composed images provide the canvas for career performances by ...

Cardinal movie DVD
$10.29 Jennifer Jones won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her screen debut in this true story. Jones plays young French peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous, who sees a vision of a "beautiful lady" near her home in Lourdes in 1858. Based on the novel of the same name by Franz Werfel, THE SONG OF BERNADETTE explores Bernadette's trials and tribulations from her impoverished family to her difficulties at school to the derision her visions bring upon her and at last to her affliction with bone-marrow cancer. Under the incisive eye of director Henry King, the film is seen through Bernadette's perspective but at the same time focuses upon the effect that Bernadette has upon her family, her champions, and her detractors. The acting is excellent, and no detail has gone untouched in the art direction, costumes, and cinematography. Best of all, THE SONG OF BERNADETTE stands among a rare group of Hollywood films in which visual integrity is matched step ...

$14.85 This provocative portrait of juvenile delinqency in a 1950s inner-city high school was based on the best-selling novel by Evan Hunter. Groundbreaking in its gritty realism and its use of rock & roll on the soundtrack, BLACKBOARD JUNGLE paved the way for such realistic and tough adolescent pictures as WEST SIDE STORY and REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE. The atmospheric tale of a teacher's harrowing experience in the New York City school system stars Glenn Ford as Richard Dadier, an idealistic teacher assigned to a new school located in one of the poorest and ethnically diverse city neighborhoods. Dadier's idealism fades as he struggles to make a difference to his indifferent students. Darkly ominous cinematography highlights the street world of the desperate delinquents as they carouse, smoke, and steal after school. The film features smoldering performances by a young Sidney Poitier and Vic Morrow as tough-as-nails rebels fighting over the role of leader in Dadier's classroom. This innovative and ultimately uplifting portrayal of a generation at odds with the world served as a seminal portrait of the darker side of the 1950s; however, it was laced with controversy as well, as it was withdrawn from the 1955 Venice ...
