(3 Customer Reviews)
Folkie singer/songwriter Brett Dennen's self-titled debut has the easygoing lope and world music influences of Jack Johnson or Dave Matthews, and his voice is oddly similar to that of Tracy Chapman, with the same slightly nasal quality and occasionally bluesy inflections. Though Brett Dennen is an agreeable listen, perfect for any anti-chain coffeehouse or independent bookstore, its lack of genuinely catchy tunes or thought-provoking lyrics means it tends to slip quickly from memory. The main exception is the thoughtful ballad "All We Have," which features Dennen's most affecting vocal. Too much of the rest is simply pleasant. ~ Stewart Mason
Personnel: Brett Dennen (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Randy Schwartz (mandolin, drums, background vocals); Jonathan McEuen (mandolin); Taras Prodaniuk (bass instrument); Marty VanLoan (drums); Perla Batalla, Summer Doty (background vocals).

Shivers your timbers!!!!! Brett has the sweetest voice, writes the most incredible lyrics, and is so charismatic! He is a gentle giant and a treasure to the music scene. Watching Brett sing his beautiful songs, strumming his jazzy guitar and rockin' out is a wonderful memory etched in my brain. He is in his own world. We are so fortunate to have him. You go Brett! Shimmers & leaps - it's an amazing discovery! Brett Dennen's album is the most exciting music I've discovered recently. His lyrics are right up there with Paul Simon, Bob Dylan & all of the greats. He's discovered how to make his guitar speak without yelling & still be heard "above the madness." Desert Sunrise is the most beautiful love song ever written! All We Have should be played before every presidential press conference. Oh The Glorious is a new anthem for appreciating the potential we all have to do something truly great in life. If you don't listen to this lad, you'll be kicking yourself (like the record label who said "The Beatles - oh, rock music is on the way out - we're not interested.") I predict this talented artist will be world famous within a year! Submitted by Anne (Brooklyn, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Brett Dennen album
$16.45 Alice Peacock wisely opens her debut album with her strongest song, and it's a very strong song, indeed. "I Hear You Say" explores the Venus and Mars distinction between what men say to women and how women interpret it. "Every now and then you say something I understand," she begins, responding to a boyfriend's remarks, then goes on to offer a girlfriend's gloss: "And you will say that everything is gonna be okay/That you could never ask for more... I hear you say that you're easily impressed." The translation may be rough, but somewhere between what he says and what she hears, you can tell things aren't going to work out. "I Hear You Say" impresses because it has something fresh to say about love and the war between the sexes, the imperishable subject of pop music, and because Peacock delivers its lyrics with a conviction that doesn't miss their undercurrent of humor. The equally feisty "Get Your Own," which follows, starts out sounding like another, more exasperated breakup song, and it only gradually becomes apparent that the narrator is actually talking to a female friend who has overstayed her welcome. The one-two punch of these two powerful, individual songs can make the first-time listener to Real Day giddy with anticipation: Can the rest of the album be this good?
Well, no, but the other nine songs have their definite pleasures. Peacock is not quite the master of her material, sometimes overwriting (the pontifications of "Cracks and Daggers"), sometimes underwriting (in "My Love I Will," she never quite says what it is she will do), ...
| | Graham Parker Your Country CD (2004)
Brett Dennen CD music
$12.49 Despite the implications of the title, YOUR COUNTRY is not exactly a "country" album, though it does find British-born Graham Parker respectfully acknowledging the influence of American country music. There's a higher twang quotient, as well as a slightly loping, shuffling beat, but this is just more of the same wonderful stuff fans have come to appreciate from Parker. YOUR COUNTRY continues in the Parker tradition of reflective, soulful roots-rocking indignation, sung with that most human and welcoming of raspy voices.
Highlights include "Cruel Lips," a relaxed, honky-tonk-flavored duet with Lucinda Williams that would've been perfect for Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash to cover, and the yearning "Almost Thanksgiving Day," which shows Parker still finding inspiration from the Band. (The moniker of his 1970s ensemble the Rumour is the title of a Band song from STAGE FRIGHT.) There's also an unexpectedly faithful cover of Jerry Garcia's tale of life on the run, "Sugaree." However, the terse "Tornado Alley" and the wry "The Rest Is History" exemplify what Parker does best--framing tart, laconic observations of our world with engaging, earthy melodies.

| | Black Keys Rubber Factory CD (2004)
Brett Dennen music CDs
$10.09 Though the Black Keys resemble post-punk garage revivalists like the White Stripes, and are likely to raise an eyebrow among old-school blues purists, the duo packs a serious blues punch. The minimal sound of RUBBER FACTORY moves on the rickety skeleton of Dan Auerbach's fuzzed-out guitar and Patrick Carney's no-frills drumming, and stays true to the raw, electric blues for which the Fat Possum label (the Black Keys' home) is rightfully famous.
RUBBER FACTORY bears the ghosts of Fat Possum artists like Junior Kimbrough and CeDell Davis, and through them, naturally, electric pioneers like Muddy Waters. The Keys mine this tradition admirably, with a sincere approach to the blues idiom bolstered by Auerbach's soulful vocals and the duo's stripped-down, juke-joint sound. But the Keys are not merely paying homage. Instead, they layer funky grooves ("The Desperate Man"), NUGGETS-inspired grunge ("10 A.M. Automatic"), a love of 1970s hard rock ("Grown So Ugly"), ...
| | Brett Dennen So Much More CD (2006)
Brett Dennen songs
$11.39 Occasionally, one comes across a male vocalist who has a very female style of singing and actually sounds like he could be a woman -- and that can be an artistic plus. It has certainly worked well for Jimmy Scott, one of the finest male jazz vocalists of all time. And having a female-sounding voice is also a positive for singer/songwriter Brett Dennen, whose So Much More demonstrates that he shares Scott's strong appreciation of Billie Holiday. But unlike Scott, Dennen is not a jazz singer; his turf is folk-rock, and Tracy Chapman is as strong an influence -- or an even stronger influence -- than Lady Day. The Holiday influence asserts itself in his vocal phrasing but not stylistically or genre-wise; Chapman, however, has influenced Dennen's songwriting in addition to influencing his soulful phrasing. The feminine quality that Dennen brings to his introspective, sometimes melancholy performances doesn't mean that he is devoid of male influences; discerning listeners will also hear traces of Bob Dylan and Dave Matthews in his material (Dennen clearly shares Matthews' appreciation of African pop). And none of these influences -- either female or male -- are people Dennen goes out of his way to emulate; it's clear that Dennen is his own person whether he is reflecting on romantic matters or sociopolitical concerns. Gratefully, Dennen avoids being preachy on his more sociopolitical lyrics; his ...
| | Alanis Morissette Flavors Of Entanglement CD (2008)
Brett Dennen album
$15.65 Four full years after 2004's SO-CALLED CHAOS, Canadian pop star Alanis Morissette finally returned with a new studio album, FLAVORS OF ENTANGLEMENT. While the former outing was informed by the ever-confessional performer's romance with Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds, this '08 offering deals with the dissolution of that relationship, particularly on the piano ballad "Not As We" and the wistful techno track "Moratorium." The latter tune, like much of FLAVORS, is shaped considerably by U.K. producer Guy Sigsworth, who is best known for aiding Bjork with her icy electro arrangements. The chilly keyboard-laden atmosphere is an appropriate change given Morissette's post-breakup preoccupations, but the record is far from club-friendly--in fact, the guitar-heavy opener, "Citizens of the Planet" sounds like the singer is sitting in on a Korn tune, and the driving "Underneath" features chiming melodies that wouldn't be out of place on a Coldplay album. Although some fans might be initially bewildered by the sonic changes on ENTANGLEMENT, Morissette's signature voice and lyrics keep the album from being a drastic departure, allowing her to grieve for a lost love ...
