ELECTRIC BLUE WATERMELON furthers the notion that the North Mississippi Allstars have become something of a rolling history of 20th-century musical forms. Deeply rooted in Delta blues of the heavily rhythmic, modal variety pioneered by Charlie Patton (the band covers Patton's "Mississippi Bollweevil" here) and practiced by latter-century artists like R.L. Burnside, the Allstars spread their wings to encompass old-school rock & roll, country, electrified blues rock, '60s psychedelia, hip-hop, and a dash of alt-rock sensibility.
Typically uneasy musical partners go remarkably well together in the Allstars world. Even the deepest roots music (there are two Otha Turner compositions, originally written for fife and drums) and a nod to contemporary country (Dickinson's duet with Lucinda Williams on "Hurry Up Sunrise") make it into the mix, proving the Allstars to be one of the most versatile and wide-ranging bands around.

Electric Blue Watermelon album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Electric Blue Watermelon CD music
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the ...
| | North Mississippi Allstars Polaris CD (2003)
Electric Blue Watermelon music CDs
$9.09 North Mississippi Allstars return with Polaris, their most ambitious album yet. They added Duwayne Burnside on guitar and vocals, and brought an even more eclectic group of songs to the table. Starting with the soulful rocker "Eyes," they slide right into a fabulous version of Junior Kimbrough's "Meet Me in the City." "Conan" starts with nice fingerpicked acoustic guitars before moving into and out of a country boogie before the guitar solo. Luther Dickinson's meaty slide is featured on all over the place, often recalling Duane Allman. Pegged as roots rockers and loosely identified with the jam-band scene, North Mississippi Allstars might surprise some people with tunes like "Otay" and "Time for the Sun to Rise," which are extremely well-produced pure pop tunes. The Dickinson brothers have ...

Electric Blue Watermelon songs
$7.99 DEJA VOODOO serves as a comeback for Gov't Mule, who lost founding member Allen Woody in August 2000. Bandmates Warren Haynes and Matt Abts carried on with a search to fill Woody's shoes, and this led to live recordings featuring guest bassists on each cut. This studio outing welcomes the arrival of former Black Crowes bass player Andy Hess and keyboardist Danny Louis, ...
