Progressive Rhode Island trio Urdog concocts inventive, abstract music for head-trippers on the follow-up to 2004's Garden of Bones. Heavily saturated by Jeff Knoch's Farfisa, the expressive kitwork of drummer/vocalist Erin Rosenthal, and acid guitar maestro Dave Lifriri, Urdog may be an acquired taste, but with hints of early Pink Floyd, Can, Amon Düül, and King Crimson, tracks like the instrumental "Path of the Meridians" and the offbeat "Robur, the Conqueror" will never bore the listener. "Nepenthe" is a soothing initiation to the colorful soundscapes that follow, and while it may not be for everyone, Urdog barks with life. ~ John D. Luerssen

From the sound of this disc, the members of this trio had at some point immersed themselves in the artier edges of '70s progressive rock. The keening and careening Farfisa organ in particular bears echoes of the likes of Pink Floyd (at their spaciest and more dissonant), Soft Machine, and a number of Krautrock groups. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career.
