| Not easy to understand, but easy to enjoy... In case you didn't know all of the lyrics are in another language (sounds like Arabic), but the music is awesome. If you like older dance music this is a good CD to purchase. I initally bought it because one of the songs was used in the movie "The Fifth Element". All of the other tracks have a similar sound and beat. Most of the tracks were also produced by noted producer Don Was. I would recommend it, but only if you can get past not being able to understand the vocals (but they are printed in English in the liner notes). | A fantastic glimpse into foreign music I bought this album in 1998, thanks to the film "The Fifth Element" just like another reviewer. The track "Alech Taadi" is in the movie and is one of the highlight tracks of the album. However, it isn't the only good track on the album; nearly half of the eleven songs are tremendous achievements in combining traditional Arabic music style with a contemporary Western under-beat, particularly songs like "Adieu," "Chebba" and "N'Ssi N'Ssi." In light of a growing anti-Arabic sentiment in the United States today, I still listen to this album regularly in my car, unafraid to play it loudly with the windows rolled down: I can't count how many times I've been asked in a good way about the music. The songs are all sung in Arabic, and for many that means disappointment because Khaled hasn't sold out and performed the songs in English. I suppose that only people who appreciate music more than lyrics would find this music both beautifully produced but a great addition to world music artists from other cultures, like Loreena McKennitt, Kitaro, Deep Forest and others. | Unintelligibly great! One of the things that make raï so great I think is the vocal chord range and progression of the arabic tongue which does not have an equal in western vocals. I don't if I don't get the words, it's not a big deal after all. I usually don't listen hard to Phil Collins' or Bryan Adams' lyrics anyway, however I have been told by informed sources that most of the lyrics by raï performers are about nightlife, lewdness and other mischief. Great! Which is why the moslem hardliners are after the artists, who frequently receive death threats. Khaled himself have managed to change his music into a more commercial world music kind of thing with this and latter releases, however that should not be a reason not to give it a try. This was the first album of four that I've picked up by Khaled by now, and it still sounds great. By Sheik Yerbouti (Tinseltown) This review is for a different format. |
