If you like vintage Bobby McFerrin, where he layered his voice, sang lovely melodies, and offered a gentle vibe that seemed to delve into both world music and jazz, then this collaboration between Cameroonian Richard Bona (who plays most of the instruments), Lokua Kanza from the Congo, and Gerald Toto -- all accomplished artists in their own right -- is for you. While there's an occasional African sensibility to the music, as on "Flutes," it's toned down to offer a kind of global experience that can't be pinpointed to any one place. That they're all excellent singers is immediately apparent (listen to the harmonies on "Na Ye" as an example), and the understated arrangements are there to support the vocals rather than stand alone. They give a relaxed blues-lite touch to "Help Me" and sound soulful, but ultimately there's very little that sticks in the memory once the record's finished. ~ Chris Nickson

Toto Bona Lokua album
$14.65 On his first jazz date as a leader since 1992, Czechoslovakian bassist and composer Miroslav Vitous comes out of the gate with a host of heavyweights on one of the more lyrically swinging dates in modern jazz. Vitous' engaged, pulsing, and deeply woody tone is featured in the company of John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, and Jack DeJohnette. While the crystalline sound of Manfred Eicher's ECM is everywhere here, as is the open-ended speculative jazz that the label is renowned -- and ridiculed for ...

Toto Bona Lokua CD music
$10.95 Principally recorded at Sear Sound, New York, New York and Moffou Studios, Bamako, Mali.
Yet another of Harry Belafonte's protégés who later made a big name for himself, Cameroon's Richard Bona takes time out from his ace session bass life to make another remarkably versatile, impeccably polished solo album, Munia: The Tale, his first on Verve. While Bona allows rock, jazz, funk, and Brazilian influences through the window, the melodies and rhythmic ...
| | John Mclaughlin Thieves And Poets CD (2003)
Toto Bona Lokua music CDs
$15.39 Since the late '60s, John McLaughlin's name has been synonymous with electric fusion guitar. But McLaughlin is equally accomplished on the acoustic guitar; he has a long history of excelling on that instrument, which he plays exclusively on Thieves and Poets. This 2003 release, in fact, isn't fusion in the amplified jazz-rock sense but rather acoustic-oriented post-bop with Euro-classical leanings. Thieves and Poets finds McLaughlin joining forces with ...

Toto Bona Lokua songs
$13.85 Combine the innovative guitar energy of legendary fusion master Mike Stern with old friends (bassist Richard Bona, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta) and new (saxman Kenny Garrett), and anything is bound to happen. But fans expecting raucous swinging and jamming the whole time may be surprised at the subtle lyricism and ...

| | Chicken Shack Stan Would Rather Go Live CDs (2008) Import
Toto Bona Lokua CD music
$17.95 All the original chickens, bar frontman Stan Webb, flew this coop years ago, but the Shack remained open nonetheless, continuing to serve up steaming helpings of British blues. Stan Would Rather Go Live caught the band live on both tape and film, at a 2004 gig in Lyme Regis, England, for this paired CD/DVD set. It was the kind of show that most groups dream about, where the songs flow out effortlessly and the band just rides the groove ever higher in delight. This is the kind of performance Chicken Shack deliver as a matter of course, yet there was something undeniably special about this night. The set list was comprised of Shack's hits and blues standards, a number of which the band made its own decades ago, with the group embracing blues' many tones. Webb is the master of them all, as is Gary Davies, with whom he so deftly trades riffs and licks. That's best heard on the group's simmering cover of "The Thrill Has Gone," where delicate picked guitar is interwoven with emotive, searing leads. One would think it would be the centerpiece of the set, but that seemingly arrives with the haunting original "You Are the Sweetest Little Thing," paired with a seething take of NiN's "Hurt" (a song, of course, ...
