| Wonderful Franck
I am one of those (apparently) few persons who early in life fell in love with the Franck Symphony in D Minor. I really don't feel I've heard a bad performance, but several days ago I heard the Franck on our Public Radio KSUI in Iowa City, and thought when I heard it "Wow...what young Turk is conducting this??!!??" Brisker than usual tempos, excellent use of rubato and a fine orchestral sound. Sounded relatively new. And so when the end of the piece arrived and I found that it was Monteux conducting the CSO you could have knocked me over with a feather! This recording is about 45 years old!! I immediately put this on my "Buy Now" list and I am not disappointed at all. I listen to music primarily in stereo, although I do have a fine 5.1 setup. In stereo this is a wonderful production, and within the next few days I will listen on my 5.1 system, but it isn't the extra presence that will carry the day, rather it is the conducting that is in the forefront. I would heartily recommend this to anyone not having and not knowing the Franck Symphony; I also give the same recommendation to those who know it and enjoy as I do. I was terribly embarrassed to find that I did not own this on CD or on Vinyl....now I do!
