Dominican singer Andy Andy comes from the famed Villalona family, and brings their merengue roots to his sound, which is a vibrant update of
the Dominican bachata style. Not wanting to capitalize on the family
name to make his own, he dropped it entirely, preferring to stand or
guitar-and-percussion-driven, mid-tempo bachata sound that is Andy's
stock in trade, over which he lays down his mellifluous vocals. The
unusual thing about the album is that, towards the end, the first two
songs are reprised in "ballad" versions that de-emphasize the percussive aspects in favor of a more romantic approach. In the interest of leaving no stone unturned, Andy Andy closes IRONIA with yet a third version of opener "Que Ironia," this one taking a hip-hop-inflected reggaeton approach. With this much diversity on display, it's hard to guess what else the Dominican songbird might have up his sleeve.

Ironia
$10.89 Luis Enrique is widely known for developing a new style of salsa that smoothed out and toned down the normally high-energy genre, pairing still-danceable rhythms with a mellow vibe and crooning vocal style. CICLOS finds the Nicaraguan singer mining familiar territory in his trademark relaxed manner. On tracks such as the yearning, "Como Volver a Ser Feliz" and the soaring "Inocencia" Enrique delivers ...

| | More Oar: A Tribute To Alexander "Skip" Spence CD (1999)
Ironia
$12.95 1999's More Oar pays tribute to one of psychedelia's brightest lights, Skip Spence. His 1969 album Oar is a psych-folk classic, as well as a collector's item, ranking as one of Columbia's lowest-selling albums when it was originally released. This tribute marks the 30th anniversary of Oar's release and features performances from Spence fans as prominent as Robert Plant, Beck, and Tom Waits, and as underground as the Minus Five, Flying Saucer Attack, and Outrageous Cherry.
More Oar explores the folk, country, and rock elements of the original, ranging from Robert Plant's hushed, acoustic "Little Hands" to the smorgasbord of samples on Beck's "Halo Of Gold." Mudhoney's "War in Peace" and Outrageous Cherry's "Keep It All Under Your Hat" deliver straight-up garage-psych, while the Durocs "Margaret Tiger-Rug" and the Ophelias' "Lawrence of Euphoria" explore the vaudevillian side of psychedelia. Flying Saucer Attack and Alistair Galbraith deliver two of the most darkly acid-tinged tracks on the album, "Grey-Afro" and "This Time He Has Come;" the Minus 5's "Doodle" and Diesel Park West's "All Come yo Meet Her" the sunnier side of psychedelia. Though More Oar was intended as a tribute to the landmark album, Spence's ...
| | Will Bradley & Ray McKinley Orc Best Of CD (2005)
Ironia
$10.59 Will Bradley's legacy is largely built on the work he did between 1939 and 1941, which corresponds with his collaboration with drummer and singer Ray McKinley. McKinley was one of the era's best and most dynamic big band drummers, and with Bradley's unassuming but solid trombone skills, plus Fred Slack's explosive piano playing, the Will Bradley Orchestra developed a patented boogie/swing style on hits like the two-part "Beat Me Daddy (Eight to the Bar)," "Scrub Me Mama (With a Boogie Beat)," and the smooth, easy "Celery Stalks at Midnight," all of which are included here. A rare trio outing with Bradley, McKinley, and Slack on the fun, loose "Down the Road a Piece" is a particular delight. Bradley was never much of a publicity hound, so he isn't probably as well known as he should be, but the music speaks for itself. A great set. ~ Steve Leggett
