$26.59 This four-CD set from Spain's Definitive label is a redone replica of the Mosaic set issued in the United States as a limited edition for a far better price. What the consumer gives up are the stellar liner notes of the Mosaic set, but he/she gains the same remastered material featuring all of Illinois Jacquet's sides as a leader for the Apollo, Aladdin, Metro, Savoy, and Victor/Bluebird labels. During this period, Jacquet's popularity was soaring and the music here, from swing to honking R&B, reveals why. Much of the material here is readily available elsewhere, but only on the Mosaic set -- now out of print -- is it assembled in one place, making this an indispensable and smart buy for fans of the music of the era, as well as Jacquet aficionados. ~ Thom Jurek
This four-CD set has all of the recordings made as a leader by tenor-saxophonist Illinois Jacquet during a period when he was at the height of his popularity. After his classic solo made "Flying Home" a major hit for Lionel Hampton in 1942, Jacquet spent time with Cab Calloway's band, was a sensation with Jazz at the Philharmonic, and was featured as a star soloist with Count Basie. In 1946, Jacquet went out on his own and his combo (ranging from six to eight pieces) was extremely popular, featuring its leader's hard-swinging solos which utilized a liberal amount of honks and screams. The first real R&B tenorman, Illinois Jacquet was always a much more well-rounded soloist than the specialists who followed him. The 17 sessions that are included on this essential box draws its material from the Aladdin, Apollo, ARA, Savoy, and Victor catalogues. Some of the music has been readily available in recent years, but this is the best way to acquire the swinging performances. Among Jacquet's most notable sidemen are trumpeters Joe Newman, Emmett Berry (who was actually the leader ...

| | Devil's Got A New Disguise: The Very Best Of Aerosmith CD (1980) (Import) Bonus DVD; Japan
Rise Vision Comin
$48.45 This reissue includes new deluxe packaging with original release liner notes, photos, and artwork.
Longtime Aerosmith fans are likely to quibble about the set list here. How to pare down one of rock's all-time greatest and longest-running rock bands to 18 songs? Even so, 2006's DEVIL'S GOT A NEW DISGUISE: THE VERY BEST OF AEROSMITH does an admirable job, offering a single-disc crash course in the group's biggest and best-known tunes.
Ranging from the their 1970s heyday throughout their astonishing late '80s comeback and beyond, DEVIL'S plays like a feel-good hard-rock radio revival. Old-schoolers will be happy to find the staples--"Dream On," "Walk This Way," and "Sweet Emotion"--while second-generation Aerosmith fans will find blockbuster MTV fare like "Cryin'" and "Crazy." The band's patented boogie shuffle is accounted for on "Back in the Saddle" and "Rag Doll," among others. Two new tracks, one of which gives the album its title, are also included.
Originally decried by critics as an American rip-off of the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith blew these criticisms away by going on to become the biggest and best hard rock band of the '70s. Fronted by funky and fast-talking Steven Tyler, Aerosmith was anchored by the rock-solid rhythm tandem of Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer, while guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford were the instrumental gunslingers of the band.
Much of Aerosmith's appeal lies in the band's outlaw ...
