Personnel: Oscar Peterson (piano); Oscar Peterson; George Mraz (bass instrument); Ray Price (drums). Audio Remasterer: Willem Makkee. Liner Note Author: Richard Palmer. Recording information: MPS-Studio, Villingen, Germany (11/1970). Photographer: German Hasenfratz. Oscar Peterson's series of recordings for Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer during the 1960s and early '70s are one of many high points in his long career. With George "Jiri" Mraz on bass and Ray Price on drums, Peterson's flashy romp through "I Love You" (complete with a humorous detour into the opera "Pagliacci") and mid-tempo walk through "All of You" salute Cole Porter in style on Walking the Line. "Rock of Ages" isn't the old hymn but a lively, gospel-inflected Peterson original that will easily get any congregation swinging and swaying to the music. His mastery of the ballad form is heard in his sensitive interpretation of "Once Upon a Summertime," which showcases Mraz's gorgeous tone, as Price sits out this one. ~ Ken Dryden This fine Oscar Peterson date from 1970 features a trio rounded out by bassist George Mraz and drummer Ray Price. Peterson has always excelled in the trio format, and WALKING THE LINE is no exception. As fans know, Peterson is a dazzling technician, turning out a blinding flurry of notes one minute ("Just Friends"), then coming back the next with a ballad exquisite enough to break your heart ("Once Upon a Summertime"). Fluent in blues, hard bop, swing, and post-bop, Peterson's approach can range from dramatic to extremely delicate. All these facets are on display on WALKING THE LINE (bolstered by the sensitive interplay of Price and Mraz), making this one of the best dates of Peterson's late-'60s/early-'70s period. Remastered sound makes it that much more enjoyable.. Audio Mixer: Anthony Braxton. Audio Remasterer: Paul Serrano. Liner Note Author: John B. Litweiler. Recording information: Sound studios (03/27/1968/04/10/1968). Photographer: Diane Allmen. While it is not as powerful or as revelatory as For Alto, Anthony Braxton's second album for Delmark, 3 Compositions of New Jazz is his debut as a leader and showcases just how visionary -- or out to lunch depending on your point of view -- he was from the very beginning. Recorded nine months after his debut with Muhal Richard Abrams on Levels and Degrees of Light, Braxton's compositional methodology and his sense of creating a band are in full flower. For one thing, there is no use of a traditional rhythm section, though drums and a piano are used. The band is comprised of Leroy Jenkins on violin and percussion, Braxton on everything from alto to accordion to mixer, Leo Smith on trumpet and bottles, and Abrams on piano (and alto clarinet on one track). All but one track -- "The Bell" -- are graphically titled, so there's no use mentioning titles because computers don't draw in the same way. There is a sonorous unity on all of these compositions, which Braxton would draw away from later. His use of Stockhausen is evident here, and he borrows heavily from the melodic precepts of Ornette Coleman. ...
