This collection of 15 songs recorded by the Zoot Sims Quartet features U.S. jazz pianist Dave McKenna.
Tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims recorded on a regular basis as a leader for most of 45 years, and virtually all of his many sessions are worth acquiring. Sims's Bethlehem date also gives one a look at the great pianist Dave McKenna in his early days, along with bassist George Tucker and drummer Dannie Richmond. Sims mostly explores standards from the swing era (including a rare version of "Bill Bailey") on this enjoyable and consistently swinging set. ~ Scott Yanow
Features Dave McKenna, George Tucker and Dannie Richmond and includes the bonus track 'These Foolish Things' from the album 'On Campus'. Lone Hill Jazz. 2005.
Recorded in New York, New York on June 7, 1960. Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler and Joseph F. Laredo.
This version contains an extra song.
CD contains 1 bonus track.

Down Home album
$11.79 STANLEY DANCE SESSIONS is a remastered, 10-track release by jazz saxophone player Budd Johnson, featuring the tracks "Foggy Nights," "Used Blues," and "Summertime."
Saxophonist Budd Johnson made a series of excellent recordings for producer Stanley Dance in February 1958 and June 1967. The 1958 dates (septet and quintet) featured trumpeter Charlie Shavers; the septet included trombonist Vic Dickenson and Al Sears, who blew the baritone sax instead of his customary tenor. Pianists were Ray Bryant and Bert Keyes, who also played organ. The bassist in 1958 was Joe Benjamin; the drummer was Kansas City Jo Jones. The music is outstanding. "Destination Blues" is particularly strong, with all of the horns in fine fettle. The collective energy, especially what boils up out of the quintet on "Blues by Five" is spectacular, with Benjamin and Jones each working up exhilarating solos and Charlie Shavers blowing his top in heated exchanges with Budd Johnson. The inclusion of four powerful tracks recorded in 1967 with the Earl Hines Trio transforms a superb reissue into one of the strongest entries in the entire Lone Hill Jazz catalog. Using both the tenor and soprano saxophones, ...

| | Keith Jarrett Birth CD (1971)
Down Home music CDs
$10.65 BIRTH, the classic 1971 album from legendary pianist Keith Jarrett, features six tracks.
Pianist Keith Jarrett's sessions of July 1971 resulted in three LPs and the birth of his finest group: a quartet (and sometimes quintet) with tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Paul Motian. This particular album has some eccentric moments, with Jarrett switching to soprano on the effective "Mortgage on My Soul" and making appearances on steel drum, recorder, and banjo (in addition to piano) on two adventurous pieces. Redman is featured ...

| | Ricardo Villalobos Green And Blue CDs (2006)
Down Home album
$19.19 Live mix CDs are their own art form, capturing something not only as it happened but in the context of, hopefully, a huge crowd getting down somewhere. In this case the "somewhere" was the Green and Blue event hosted annually in Germany by the Cocoon label, and the features DJs Loco Dice and Ricardo Villalobos, two of the bigger acts in the current field, the latter especially for his astonishing run of releases. Though the pictures give a sense of the hot atmosphere and massive partying going on, there's no way Green and Blue can capture the experience -- no crowd noise heard (except at some of the quietest moments, as with the break on Philip Bader's "Perry Rhodan") and, unless one's own speaker system is accommodating, no way to get the bass just right. Typical caveats aside, though, this is a pretty sharp document for both DJs; it's not clear if both discs ...
