| | Hard To Find 45'S On CD, Vol. 2: 1961-64 CDs (1996)
Fabulous 50S: 1954 CD music
$13.49 The second installment of the Hard to Find 45's series is, like the first, a wide assortment of Top 40 hits, some of them indeed very hard to find on CD or even hear on the radio. Some of them are not really that hard to find on CD, though this disc (like every one in this series) takes pains to present original 45 RPM single versions, often in stereo. Whereas the first volume was devoted to material from 1955-1960, this goes into the next era (1961-1964), and though it's pretty pop-inclined, there's a good deal of diversity. There's doo wop verging on soul by the Stereos ("I Really Do Love You," the Flares' "Foot Stompin'," Clyde McPhatter's "Lover Please"), girl-sung teen idol pop (Little Peggy March's "I Will Follow Him," Marcie Blane's "Bobby's Girl"), the poppiest brand of girl group sounds (the Murmaids' "Popsicles and Icicles," Diane Renay's "Navy Blue," the Caravelles' "You Don't Have to Be a Baby to Cry"), the foreign novelty (Singing Nun's "Dominique"), middle-of-the-road pop (Joe Dowell's "Wooden Heart"), forgotten British Invasion/middle-of-the-road pop/folk-country (the Bachelors' "Diane"), and a hot rod tune (the Hondells' "Little Honda") whose relatively hard-driving toughness is almost out of character on this CD. As far as hits that are really hard to hear on oldies radio or buy on CD in some fashion, there aren't that many. But some of the tracks that really don't ...

The wonderful thing about gospel music is that it's a good bet that the current generation of The Canton Spirituals surely sings the same lovely messages as the group did in 1943, when it was founded by Harvey Watkins Sr. For nearly 60 years, the ever-evolving group from Canton, Mississippi has been a force in the genre, and one of the top quartets in the country. Watkins' son, Harvey Watkins Jr, is currently the musical director. The timeless messages come through with a brassy, bluesy intensity, that sound like they came from up the road in Memphis -- especially on vibrant, bouncy clapalongs like "I Feel the Spirit" and deep, organ based proclamations a la "Church Is Gonna Make It." It's not all happy-clappy; the group reaches a little deeper on the emotional ballad "Softly and Tenderly," which speaks of the joy of belonging to God. Guest vocalist Genobia Jeter Jones adds a feisty feminine dimension to "Never Let Go," which adds variety and challenges the boys to keep up. You don't hear much rock guitar in traditional gospel, which makes the blistering "Holy Ghost Guitar" one of the more surprising and electrifying tracks. ~ Jonathan Widran

Fabulous 50S: 1954 music CDs
$15.29 Steig Aus marks a turning point for Embryo. Recorded in 1971-1972, during three separate sessions that also gave birth to Rocksession, the album captures the group actively looking for the ethnic fusion that will soon become its main m.o. for the better part of the decade. It also signals the beginning of the group's distancing from the record industry -- both albums were rejected by their major label, which led to a transaction with the forward-looking small label Brain. Steig Aus features extremely inspired jazz-rock jams, which makes it a lot less friendly than their 1974 hit record, a lot jazzier too, but still a breathtaking journey into Krautrock-meets-American free jazz-meets-North African percussion. The first session yielded the side-long "Call," a loosely structured suite, and "Dreaming Girls," a Miles Davis-like ballad. Both tracks feature drummer Christian Burchard, bassist Jörg Evers, violinist Edgar Hoffmann, U.S. organist Jimmy Jackson, and American jazz keyboardist Mal Waldron. The latter, who had previously played with Eric Dolphy and Max Roach, ...
