| | Bireli Lagrene Move CD (2005)
Entre Amis CD music
$13.69 French guitarist Bireli Lagrene's recent work has helped to reinvigorate the classic gypsy swing style while simultaneously adding excitement and diversity to the world's jazz market. On Move, Lagrene and his Gipsy Project really spice up his Django Reinhardt-influenced chops and cleverly arrange some of the more memorable standards and jazz styles launched on America's shores including bebop and cool. There are so many exceptional works in the Great American Songbook that it would be almost irresponsible not to include a few in one's repertoire. "Cherokee," and "This Can't Be Love," make the cut this time as two carefully placed covers that add familiarity to Lagrene's set. Ripe with five of Reinhardt's great compositions, including "Melodie au Crepuscule," "Hungaria," "Troublant Bolero," "Nuages," and "Danse Norvegienne," Lagrene's technical prowess shines on with his classy Le Hot Club of France sound that is utilized by a quartet instead of with his previous larger ensembles. Originals by Lagrene add brilliance in the form of "Place du Tertre" and "Jadis," while "Un Certain Je Ne Sais Quoi," "Victor," and "Mimosa," penned by quartet members Diego Imbert, Franck Wolf, and Hono Winterstein respectfully, meet the previous standards of expertise set with The Gipsy ...

| | John Mclaughlin Live At The Royal Festival Hall CD (1989) (Import)
Entre Amis songs
$14.09 John McLaughlin, known for his successful experiments with rock fusion, Indian modal music, orchestral music, and Spanish guitar stylings, here plays virtuoso jazz on acoustic guitar, accompanied by the brilliant electric bass player Kai Eckhardt and Trilok Gurtu's unique, spellbinding percussion. They perform mostly original tunes, at once complex, rhythmically diverse, ...
| | Steve Reid Passion In Paradise CD (1999)
Entre Amis album
$14.29 Although Steve Reid left his longtime gig with the Rippingtons to focus on his burgeoning solo career, the veteran percussion and soundscape master still draws joyfully from the Russ Freeman school of pop-jazz composing and producing. Not to mention Freeman's love for exotic imagery, as the title of Reid's latest, Passion in Paradise, might indicate. While the liner notes listing of all his "toys" are a blast to read -- what is a jaycall Chinese bell tree? Seed Pods? Kokiriko? -- he pretty much lays back, providing a solid and steady percussion foundation for the lead instruments to frolic in. This is where Reid's expertise as an arranger comes in. On "Lovers Cove," he intertwines Tim Pierce's sharp electric guitar lines with the softer Godin classical guitar and vocalese of Steve Oliver, then allows the robust tenor of Jeff Kashiwa (also ex-Ripps) to trade thick riffs with Greg Adams' brash trumpet. Titles like "Midnight Rendezvous" and "Comfort Zone" pretty much sum up the story overall. The first is a showcase for Brian Culbertson's ...

| | Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?: The Best Of The Replacements CD (2006)
Entre Amis music CDs
$15.79 The first career-spanning Replacements retrospective, this 2006 collection takes listeners on a whirlwind tour of the beloved Minneapolis band's entire catalogue. Led by singer-songwriter/guitarist Paul Westerberg, the proudly shambolic group tore through the 1980s with rowdy rock rave-ups (the punky "Kids Don't Follow," the defiant "Bastards of Young"), but always tempered their finest punk moments with surprisingly tender pop tunes. ("Within Your Reach," possibly the most beautiful lo-fi tune ever penned, and the gorgeously melancholy "Here Comes a Regular," to name just two, are both included here.)
Although the ensemble never achieved commercial success, the Mats crafted a sizable number of pop-perfect classics, including the chiming "I Will Dare," the propulsive "Alex Chilton," and the urgent "Can't Hardly Wait," all of which are featured here. While 1997's two-CD ALL FOR NOTHING/NOTHING FOR ALL provides a more comprehensive look at the Replacements' major-label days, this disc offers up 10 tracks not on that set, including eight formative tunes from the band's Twin/Tone stint and two new songs recorded in '06 by the surviving original lineup. (Guitarist Bob Stinson died in 1995, and drummer Chris Mars appears only on backing vocals.) For those who missed the Mats in their heyday, this 20-track compilation is an ideal primer, and reinforces their status as one of the greatest rock groups of the '80s.

| | Sea Wolf Get To The River Before It Runs Too Low CD (2007)
Entre Amis songs
$6.29 Seattle producer Phil Ek (Built to Spill, the Shins) recorded a chunk of Sea Wolf's debut, Get to the River Before It Runs Too Low, in the studio, and the rest was recorded in Alex Church's living room. The homey setting adds a personal and intimate feel to his weary but warm acoustic-based songs about insecurities and heartbreaks. ...
