Honeycomb album Product Description
Honeycomb album by Frank Black was released Jul 19, 2005 on the Back Porch Music label. Pixies fans and casual followers of Frank Black's solo career might be surprised by the mellow, blues- and roots-inflected surfaces of HONEYCOMB. Recorded in Nashville and redolent of the famed sound of that city, HONEYCOMB contains none of the roaring guitar, bone-crunching aggression, or blood-curdling screams for which Black is best known. Instead, the album drifts like a lazy afternoon, with an introspective front-porch feel a la distinctive, literate songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Joe Henry, and Neil Young. Black's tenor sounds surprisingly sweet and vulnerable sans throaty yelps and banshee howls, and is the perfect complement to his lovely melodies. He also sacrifices his surreal word collages for more direct, human lyrics that are no less affecting or artfully employed. A host of spectacular session players--including vocalists Spooner Oldham and Dan Penn, guitarists Buddy Miller and Steve Cropper, and drummer Anton Fig--flesh out the laid-back, intimate vibe perfectly. Clueless rock hipsters might turn their noses up at the warm, lovingly crafted textures here, but HONEYCOMB ultimately makes plain what has been true all along: that Frank Black is one of pop music's great songwriters. ...See Full Description

Perfect record............. For me it's one of the best records ever !. Nice sound, good atmosphere. Thanx: Henrik By schack (Aalborg , Denmark)
no frame of reference I personally like Frank Black's solo work as much or more than the Pixies. I had a HUGE expectation for the new F.B. cd. This CD was unlike any of his other stuff. At first, I was heartbroken. I put it up and didn't listen to it for many months. Now, I'm appreciating it in a whole different way. I'm seeing him on Monday and think this material will be great live. By Paul (Tacoma, WA)
J for Junk I have listened to the Pixies since 87' and the first 4 FB cds picked this one up and all the songs are horriable, except go find your saint. Otherwise if that was'nt on the cd I'd give it 1 star. If your looking for boring slow music check it out. But it sure is not the Frank I once knew. By The Sad Punk (Osseo, Mn)
Frank Black at his best! He sings from the heart and that is what is beautiful about his music. Honeycomb ends with a great song, Sing For Joy. Also recommend: Pixies, and any other Frank Black album. By Go Flames Go! (Calgary, AB, Canada)
