Passport To Australia
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.

| | Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Live CD (2004) Bonus DVD
Passport To Australia
$14.99 To a certain extent, retro-swing is always at its best in a live setting, whether it's in a packed club or a concert hall. There it's possible to get swept in the energy of a performance, feeding off the performance of the band and the vibe of the crowd. During the live show, it's all about having a good time, and it's possible not to care about whether the music is derivative if the attitude is smirky and if the musicians are more flash than skilled. And that's why even if retro-swing makes for a good live experience, it doesn't necessarily make for a great live album, because it can fall apart under the scrutiny of a close listen, as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's 2004 double-disc Live illustrates. Containing one 17-track CD and one 17-track DVD, it captures a full set from May 15, 2003. Live finds the band in solid form, running through songs from their three albums. On-stage, they're a little looser than they are in the studio, ...

| | Van Morrison Magic Time CD (2005)
Passport To Australia
$12.59 The album includes thirteen songs, ten original Van Morrison compositions and three classic interpretations of the jazz standards, "I'm Confessin", "This Love Of Mine" and "Lonely & Blue". "Magic Time" is the first release from Van Morrison since "What's Wrong With This Picture?" in 2003 and marks the 40th anniversary of his first hits with his then band Them. With songs such as "Stranded", the title track "Magic Time", "Celtic New Year" and "Gypsy In My Soul", Van Morrison has created some of his most powerful songs to date, with every emotion seemingly having its place within the fabric of what many will view as one of his most important albums of the past twenty years.
Considering that the ever-restless Van Morrison did a shocking amount of label-hopping between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s, he managed to establish a remarkably consistent sound during that period. MAGIC TIME, Morrison's first album for Geffen and fifth label switch in the span of five releases, finds the Belfast Cowboy still nestled comfortably in the format he established around 1993's TOO ...
| | Eric Clapton Back Home CD (2005)
Passport To Australia
$11.49 Eric Clapton's first album of mostly original material since 2001, BACK HOME, as the title implies, finds the revered British guitarist/vocalist in a comfortable, confident setting. Here Clapton's signature blues-rock sound is the order of the day, as exemplified by the easy-going "Revolution," which riffs on the lyrics of the Beatles song of the same name, and ...
