South East Asian pressing of his 2005 debut features three additional tracks over the US version: 'Luna Mezz'o Mare', 'Na Sera E Maggio (An Evening In May)' and 'A Man Without Love' (Original Version). The Italian was recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and is a collection of timeless, romantic songs. With this release, Patrizio has delivered a sophisticated album that instantly conjures up images of the classic American and Italian icons of the 50s and 60s. From Federico Fellini, Sophia Loren and Gina Lollabrigida to The Godfather, Goodfellas and The Sopranos. 14 tracks in all. Universal.

THE ITALIAN features 15 tracks by the Italian pop singer.
CD contains 2 bonus tracks.
Patrizio Buanne is veritably obsessed with the sound and style of the 1950s and '60s. As a child, he won an Elvis impersonation competition when he dressed as a young version of the King, and he grew up listening almost solely to Italian or Italian-inspired music from that same time period. And now, with his debut album, The Italian, he is able to sing many of the songs he loves. Recorded in London with the Royal Philharmonic, The Italian often harks back to the sound of the original recordings, like in Jimmy Fontana's "Il Mondo," Engelbert Humperdinck's "A Man Without Love," or Mario Lanza's "Come Prima," and Buanne sounds good, his baritone blending well with the orchestra. However, Buanne runs into problems when he tries to modernize the classics. While "Parla Più Piano," from The Godfather, starts out nicely, the addition of a dance-like drumbeat sounds corny and forced. Even worse is the cover of Fontana's "Che Sarà," which turns the song into an easy listening radio favorite, culminating in a gospely choral extravaganza, with alternating phrases from the crooning Buanne, who transforms the lines of leaving one's prospectless town (but with the intention of returning) into overly dramatic lovesickness, and the choir, whose sharp interpretation of the normally fluid Italian syllables gives a threatening feel to the piece. The only truly successful of these adaptations is "L'Italiano," which adds a nicely moving piano line, an electric guitar, and a brass section to the already great song, and sounds new but not kitschy. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of "Home to Mamma," which Buanne helped co-write. It's a bizarre mix of "Funiculi, Funicula," Lou Bega's "Mambo No. 5," and the Italian male's devotion to his mother, and is more confusing than anything else. The same adjective can also be applied to the Italian-language version of Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" (called "Alta Marea" here), or the closer, "Credi in Te," which is reminiscent of both Kermit the Frog's "Rainbow Connection" and Andrea Bocelli. Buanne has a fantastic voice, and his genuine love of the music is apparent, but he needs to stop trying to add so much to the songs, and just sing them how they were meant to be sung. ~ Marisa Brown

International classical crossover quartet Il Divo didn't start out in the garage practicing their exceptionally fluid tenors among the din of outraged neighbors and summer construction crews; rather, they were hunted by producers for two years like wild game in their native lands and herded into the studio, where they were sculpted into a machine of such smoldering European romanticism that the world would have no choice but to rip their very hearts out upon first listen. Sound overly dramatic? You bet, which is why Il Divo's self-titled debut depends entirely on one's opinion of Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On." Extremely wealthy producers Per Magnusson and David Krueger (Backstreet Boys), along with Steve Mac (Charlotte Church) have created the Three Tenors -- in this case four -- for the next generation, and if the first single, a cover of Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart," is any indication, all involved should see their stock rise. American tenor David Miller, French heartthrob Sébastien Izambard, Swiss tenor Urs Buhler, and Spanish baritone Carlos Marin tackle standards like "My Way" and "Unchained Melody" with an expert precision and pomp -- the latter is sung in Italian -- that aptly conveys

Dilated Peoples' debut album was hugely anticipated in the hip-hop underground, thanks to a handful of excellent singles and guest appearances that began several years prior. When it was finally released in 2000, The Platform thrilled some and mildly disappointed others. Dilated is very much a part of the back-to-basics, old-school-worshipping wing of the underground, most often compared to fellow southern Californians Jurassic 5. They've got DJ Babu of the Beat Junkies working turntables, adding an extra dimension of authenticity to Iriscience and Evidence's well-honed microphone technique. Therein lies the rub: the trio's skills are all beyond question, but sometimes the album can feel like a formalist exercise. That's largely due to the lack of variety in lyrical content, which generally consists of one purist-friendly battle rhyme after another. It's all well-executed, but considering how far hip-hop has come, it's hard not to want a more personal statement, or a few topics other than wack MCs and keeping the culture real. But other than that, The Platform is an excellent debut. The production (chiefly by the Alchemist) is lean and inventive throughout, supporting the two MCs' abstract poetics with a subtle flair. Plus, their single-minded love of hip-hop brings a tremendous enthusiasm to the best tracks. The title track, "Triple Optics," and the underground classic "Work the Angles" are particular highlights, and guests B Real, Tha Alkaholiks, Planet Asia, and Aceyalone all put in memorable appearances (especially Tha Alkaholiks, on "Right On"). If it's occasionally uneven, The Platform is still better than the vast majority of its competition, and whether or not they ultimately prove to be the saviors of hip-hop (as some would have it), their promise is undeniable. ~ Steve Huey
Gaining popularity within the underground hip-hop scene, Dilated Peoples drop their debut major label album, PLATFORM on Capitol Records. Filled with gritty beats and laced with mic skills, PLATFORM is a debut that grabs the listener's attention from the first play.
Songs like "The Platform," "Guaranteed," and "Ear Drums Pop" are pure hip-hop heaven. Joining Dilated on PLATFORM are B Real ("No Retreat"), and Tha Alkoholics ("Right On"). Beats from mad scientists like The Alchemist, Evidence, T-Ray and E-Swift keep the tracks flowin'. Some of the other cuts that shine on this winning debut are "The Main Event," "Annihilation," and "The Last Line of Defense." Make sure you check out the remix to "Ear Drums Pop," which is a hot posse cut that features White E. Ford, Defari, Planet Asia & Phil Tha Agony.

Chill In: India CD  (2005)

After recording two volumes of "Buddha Sounds" (volume two received the Gardel Award in Argentina for Best Electronic Album), the renowned producer Seoan presents "Chill In India". This is an album that not only recovers the spirit of "Buddha Sounds", but also includes the participation of the cream of PMB's artists. In doing so, people such as No oN, Rhod, Ronan Portela, Index, Dual Sessions, Debaires and Sandy Parker got together to contribute their talents to make, along with Seoan's own compositions, an enigmatic piece that transforms into an oneiric journey to the East, where the electronic relaxation of downtempo combines with deep Hindu sounds. Mixing the ancient with the ultramodern, producer Seoan assembles a compilation that offers mellow electronica melded with Hindu music. CHILL IN: INDIA includes tracks by Lila Liu, Oman Chali, and Sandy Parker, among others.
Tales Of South African Jazz
Tales Of South African Jazz CD  (2006) (Import) United Kingdom

Italian
CD $15.35
Arranger: Zim Ngqawana.
As far as it goes, this 15-track overview, Tales of South African Jazz, is well thought out. There are tracks by many artists here who are either completely unknown to American audiences, or who have been heard so infrequently only connoisseurs of the genre know their names, let alone their music. So here is a slab with the beautiful airy sound of the townships as it was, and as it is. The music collected here crosses decades. For instance, there is Hugh Masekela's (easily the most well-known artist included) read of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" from the early '70s, and Jimmy Dludlu's smooth jazz "Linda," which could have been recorded last week. But these cuts are more exception than the rule. The music of the townships is reflected mightily in cuts such as "Across Africa" by Jack "Big Voice" Lerole, and Sipho Gumede's "Township Jive," Prince Kupi's "Bosotsi," is another excellent example of the joyous, dancing harmonics and rhythms that are a trademark of South African jazz. While there is nothing to complain about on this set, there are important people left off it. For one, where is Dollar Brand (or rather, as he is known today, Abdullah Ibrahim)? He exported the music wholesale form South Africa to the world. Also, the great saxophonist Dudu Pukwana is missing from this set, as is bassist Johnny Dyani. These are big, big names who played with all manner of Western and European music and exported the rhythmic and harmonic traits central to South African jazz, and even recorded in their homelands before leaving. Ibrahim actually moved back to the region after it was liberated! This is confounding and no small complaint. That's no reason not to purchase the collection -- far from it -- it's very fine, but in no way should it be regarded it as comprehensive. ~ Thom Jurek

This genrebusting classic seamlessly fuses the traditional music of Ananda Shankar's beloved India with the heavy psych-funk of the West, where he'd spent time. Featuring breakladen killers like "Charging Tiger" and "Jungle King", mellower tracks including the beautiful "Dancing Peacocks" and the epic "Jungle Symphony". The original India-only LP has long been one of the continent's most sought-after records and is presented here complete with biographical liner notes and 4 ultra-rare bonus tracks from an EP issued to commemorate the death of Elvis Presley. Author: Ananda Shankar.
