CELTIC WOMAN is the brainchild of David Downes, a composer/conductor who was heavily involved with the American production of RIVERDANCE. Not surprisingly, all of the lights, drama, and musical bombast of that esteemed show are present on this production as well. Instead of showcasing legions of dancers, however, CELTIC WOMAN puts the emphasis on the rich heritage of traditional and contemporary Irish music, as performed by five talented female performers from varying musical backgrounds.

There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.

This longtime salsa favorite -- with the help of a little reinvention -- tops the charts once again with his 2006 record, Salsa con Reggaetón. In an effort to synthesize the old and the new, the classic and the fresh, the Univision label employed the talents of top Latin music producers Ramon B. Sanchez and Sergio George, both of whom need only touch a project for it to turn to gold. Montañez, a veteran of the world famous El Gran Combo, a crown in the Puerto Rican salsa crown, collaborated with some of the island's new breed of recording stars. Reggaeton artists like Daddy Yankee, Cheka, and Voltio are just a few who lend their flow to Montañez's new sound, which he calls "salsatón." The tunes are fun and danceable, a great mixture of thick, live sounds and the block-rockin' sound of the drum machines that give reggaeton its steely spine. Though bringing together a well-seasoned, gray-haired salsa vocalist with raw, contemporary talent may seem like a gamble, it seems to have paid off. Salsa con Reggaetón rose to the Top Five of more than one of Billboard's Latin Music charts. Andy Montañez sounds as strong and artful as he ever did. This is one for the books. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

On her fifth studio album, singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow leaves her carefree rock tunes by the side of a winding road, traveling forward with a subdued, introspective set of songs. The result is akin to Beck's SEA CHANGE, a record that largely eschews upbeat pop in favor of quieter, more thoughtful tracks. (In fact, Beck's father, David Campbell, provides string arrangements for almost every song on WILDFLOWER.)
Although there is a notable chamber-pop feel to this 2005 album, with an orchestra present on all but one track, the strings never eclipse Crow's pensive songs, and the focus here remains on her immediately recognizable and strikingly emotive vocals. "I Know Why" opens WILDFLOWER with gentle acoustic-guitar and banjo lines, while the Eastern-tinged "Chances Are" coasts over a foundation of subtle synthesizers and tabla-like drum programming. The disc's most energetic moment, "Live It Up," hews closest to Crow's past hits, but the overall mood of the record is beautifully autumnal, revealing that, even more than a decade into her solo career, ...

The Mumbles are a Brooklyn, NY-based three-piece-- a tiny band with a mighty sound. Using two keyboards, drum kit, and a female voice, they combine soul music with avant and old time jazz to create "pop songs in the key of partying down" (Time Out New York).Keysman Keith Burnstein and drummer Ethan Shorter met in the rhythm section of a 14 piece hip hop orchestra, soon striking out on their own in late 2006 to write tunes that would become Mumbles mainstays. As a duo, the boys distilled songs to their essence, rounding out their sound with the subsequent addition of vocalist Meredith Claire. Burnstein heard Claire sing at an open mic night in 2007, and was so impressed that he asked her to join the Mumbles on the spot.
