The unparalleled talent of Ray Charles is showcased here in this impeccably restored, inside and out, U.K. import edition of AT NEWPORT.

For his appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival on July 5, 1958, Charles pulled out all the stops, performing raucous versions of "The Right Time," "I Got a Woman," and "Talkin' 'Bout You." [This album was reissued in 1973 as a two-record set, packaged with Ray Charles in Person under the title Ray Charles Live (Atlantic SD 2-503).] ~ William Ruhlmann

Stunningly repackaged, remastered, and featuring new liner notes by leading jazz writers, the Warner Jazz Masters Series includes best sellers as well as rare, sought-after gems. Ray Charles' time at Atlantic is rightly considered his best. His awesome synergy of blues, gospel and jazz, superbly enhanced by his backing singers, the Raeletts, is captured on this live recording.

Nina Simone Forbidden Fruit/At Newport CD  (1998)

At Newport album
CD $10.69  5 stars Audio Samples Definitive Album
Also available as part of the Collectables box THE LEGEND AT HER BEST. Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on June 30, 1960. To call Nina Simone a jazz singer is to neglect the depth and range of her artistry. A classical pianist, folk singer, protest singer, and songwriter, her arrangements are harmonically rich, varied, and rhythmically experimental, while her voice can go from lounge singer-smooth to raw and exposed in the space of a verse. This CD is a combination of two extraordinary early albums she recorded for Colpix; the first 10 tracks comprise 1961's masterful FORBIDDEN FRUIT. The collection's opening cut, Oscar Brown's "Rags And Old Iron," is as spookily hip as any Tom Waits recording, while the creepy tango "Just Say I Love Him," with Al Shackman's stark, compelling ...

Joan Baez Live At Newport CD  (1996)

At Newport CD music
CD $15.29  5 stars Audio Samples
Recorded live at the 1963, 1964 & 1965 Newport Folk Festivals, Newport, Rhode Island. Includes liner notes by Charles J. Fuss. This album draws tracks from Joan Baez's appearances at the 1963, 1964, and 1965 Newport Folk Festivals, a time period in which she was the very epicenter of the folk scene. With her clear, strong, and bell-like soprano, Baez brought together traditional-folk materials with some of the best songs of the then-emerging songwriters of the so-called folk revival (she was the introduction for many to the work of Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Richard Fariña, and others), projecting a thematic unity between the old and the new that was instrumental in the success of the 1960s folk boom. This collection isn't quite as striking as her other live albums from this period, although only by degree, and there are several interesting tracks here, including the opener, a live version of Dylan's beautiful "Farewell Angelina," which seems almost written for (or about?) Baez. A duet with Mary Travers on "Lonesome Valley" is another highlight, as is an audience singalong on "Johnny Cuckoo." The final two tracks, "It Ain't Me Babe" and "With God on Our Side," are duets with Dylan, and while ...

CD $14.99  4.3 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 7, 1956. Includes liner notes by George Avakian and Phil Schaap. Digitally remastered by Phil Schaap (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). What makes this classic recording endure is the monumental level of intensity the band brings to each number. Ellington, in speaking of the band's competitive nature, recalled that they were all in a particularly fesity mode for this performance. That crackling energy translates to every number, and even extended to Count Basie's original drummer Jo Jones, who sat grinning from ear to ear in the front row, so moved by the swing of it all that he beat time for the band with a rolled up copy of The Christian Science Monitor. From ...

Ella Fitzgerald At Newport CD  (1958) Remastered

CD $10.85  Audio Samples
Digitally remastered using 24-Bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Universal Music Studios-East). Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Freebody Park, Newport, Rhode Island on July 4, 1957. Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Freebody Park, Newport, Rhode Island on July 6, 1957. Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhide Island on July 5, 1957. Ella Fitzgerald & Billie Holiday at Newport presents the naturally intriguing results when Verve paired two sets recorded two days apart (over the 4th of July weekend, 1957) by the two best female singers of the 20th century. Unfortunately, circumstances weren't in their favor, as the combined factors of an unsympathetic band (for Fitzgerald) and shaky health (for Holiday) make these sets just a step below the expected level of greatness. It's unclear how much time Fitzgerald had spent with her trio, though she makes her unhappiness known while trying to jump-start them to a quicker tempo on "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter" and "April in Paris." Finally, she gets the band in line, delivering crowd-pleasing renditions of "Lullaby of Birdland" and the terrific scat piece "Air Mail Special," which must have set the park on fire. Holiday, though she would live for two more years, sounds as though she's on death's doorstep, croaking her standards "Willow Weep for Me," "My Man," "Lady ...

Recorded live at Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 3, 1960 and Chicago, Illinois in June 1960. The old cover photograph of Muddy clutching John Lee Hooker's guitar gave the impression that he was at a Folk Festival rather than the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival. However, the record revealed the King of Chicago blues at his very best, shouting his music above the discordant wail of a band that included Otis Spann, James Cotton, Pat Hare and Francis Clay. Film of the event shows a sharply dressed Muddy shimmying and jiving around the stage with the energy of a man half his age. Some of that atmosphere is apparent on the record, in a program that includes 'Hoochie Coochie Man', Big ...

Miles Davis At Newport 1958 CD  (1958)

At Newport CD music
CD $9.79  4.3 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 3, 1958. Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal. Thanks to the research that went into the box set The Complete Miles Davis/John Coltrane Sessions there's a the definitive Newport 1958 date that features the debut live performances to the Miles Davis Sextet's two newest members: drummer Jimmy Cobb and pianist Bill Evans. The gig was part of a festival tribute to Duke Ellington, but that didn't stop Davis from showing off -- aggressively -- what his new band was capable of (six months later he would show the world when the band went to record Kind of Blue). This is a revelatory performance for fans of Evans. When Cobb kicks off into Charlie Parker's "Au-Leu-Cha," the tempo is breakneck. Davis' solo is all fire, pure heat, and inspiration. The melody goes by in a blink, and Cobb and Chambers carry the dictum to go faster as Davis gives way first to Coltrane, already moving his angular lines to the harmonic breaking point and doing them not in scales but in modes, fast and footloose. He's down in the groove before giving it to Cannonball Adderley to show off his bebop chops -- which ...

Art Of Losing
American Hi-Fi Art Of Losing CD  (2003) Enhanced CD

At Newport songs
CD $12.65  4.8 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Right from the first note struck by singer/guitarist Stacy Jones's band American Hi-Fi, the ex-Veruca Salt/Letters to Cleo drummer is up front about his love of straight-forward rock & roll; the kind that doesn't fit under any kind of pop-punk, emo, or rap-rock umbrella. THE ART OF LOSING finds Jones successfully indulging his tastes thanks to a snappy mix of big guitars and inescapable hooks. If you're still unsure as to what makes his heart race a little faster, it all becomes clear when Jones implores a former paramour to give back his Pixies, Cheap Trick, AC/DC, and My Bloody Valentine records throughout "The Breakup Song." Although this sophomore effort leans towards a heavier sound, American Hi-Fi still manages to sneak in other recognizable influences. Among the most recognizable are the Burundi drumming intro of the title cut that falls somewhere between Adam Ant and Bow Wow Wow, and the soaring harmonies and guitar that should make "This Is the Sound" the envy of any self-respecting Brit-pop band. Fans of garage rock ("Built For Speed") and Sonic Youth ("Teenage Alien ...
Best Of The Knack
Best Of The Knack CD  (1999)

At Newport album
CD $6.45  Audio Samples
Due to a massive Knack backlash during the early '80s (by those who felt the skinny tie-wearing new wavers were too hyped up for their own good), and the group never being able to truly follow up their smash debut, Get the Knack, it's easy to dismiss the Knack as a mere flash in the pan. But there's no denying the group has left behind several classic power pop songs in their wake, as evidenced by such subsequent greatest-hits CDs as 1999's Best of the Knack. A budget-priced collection that weighs in at barely over half-an-hour in length (only a meager ten tracks are included), Best of is in no way a definitive Knack overview (you'll be better off with the more extensive Very Best of the Knack disc from 1998, or better yet, the aforementioned Get the Knack). But if you just want the basic essentials from the much ballyhooed quartet, Best of the Knack contains most of the expected tracks: "Baby Talks Dirty," "Good Girls Don't," "Your Number or ...

Two years after its release outside the U.S. and five months after the appearance of Lionel Richie's modestly selling seventh studio album, Just for You, Island Records belatedly presents an abridged domestic version of Richie's 2002 live album, Encore, recorded in May 2001 at Wembley Arena in England. The international version of the disc had 16 tracks, among them "Tender Heart" and "Don't Stop the Music," both from Renaissance, Richie's sixth studio album, which he was promoting at the time. They have been excised from the American version of Encore, as have the international version's final two tracks, "Goodbye" and "To Love a Woman," both duets with Enrique Iglesias. Remaining are 12 performances of Richie hits from the 1980s along with two Commodores hits of the '70s, "Brick House" and "Three Times a Lady." Richie is an engaging cheerleader of a frontman, endlessly encouraging his already enthusiastic listeners with such interjections as "C'mon!," "Yeah!," and "Let's go!" The audience is content to sing along on the familiar material, with or without Richie to join them. ~ William Ruhlmann Two years after its release outside the U.S. and five months after the appearance of Lionel Richie's modestly selling seventh studio album, Just for You, Island Records belatedly presents an abridged domestic version of Richie's 2002 live album, Encore, recorded in May 2001 at Wembley Arena in England.
